Before I start welding new sheet steel into my Stang, I had one project to do as practice with using the TIG on mild steel. I've welded quite a bit of aluminium now with the TIG but not much steel. My truck needs a new exhaust so am having a go at that.
I brought a new Magnaflow muffler, used the original twin pipe flange as it mounts right behind the Oxy sensor cross pipe. The old system went 2 into 1 so I dumped the old cat and put in 2 low km Falcon cats. I'm using mandrel bend pipes, I brought some 180 degree bends to chop up, even though they don't look it in the photo. It was only a 25 degree bend so minimal elbow was used.
I'll have some flanges arriving tomorrow to weld to the back of the muffler to then make the rest of the pipe section. The old muffler was one piece right through but it is too heavy and a pain in the arse that way so am adding a second join.
I found welding mild steel much easier than aluminium so am confident now about welding the Stang with the TIG. It's just going to be a matter of learning what amps are needed as welding aluminum in AC you mostly weld in the 100-140 amp range. With this I was around the 40 amp range in DC.
