I have been waiting since mid February for an import approval to come through on my car. I wasn't expecting it overnight but I believe 8 weeks is excessive. How long did it take for anyone else recently importing? Am I just being impatient?

I would be calling to find out what the hold up is, i recently applied for a 66 caddy it took 3 weeks exactly from the time i sent the approval which i recieved 2 weeks ago, maybe they have lost it.

It can take a while, with the low AUD there's a lot of cars being imported right now so it can take twice as long.

I've heard 3 weeks is average so 6 weeks isn't unreasonable and would also depend on who you're going through and the state you're registering in.

I know one guy who had his car shipped and the co. applied at the same time and waited for approval while his car was actually on the water.

Schumacher prefer to get the approval first before shipping.

MachAttack, I believe 8 weeks is too long.

Suggest you give the relevant department a phone call. Think it is DOTARS. We have rang them before and found them quite pleasant and helpful to deal with.

I would not risk sending anything without the approval ATM, just not consistant enough, anyway they give you enough warning not to ship before approval on the website, machattack are you sure you sent all the required documents, have you recieved the email from dotars asking if the vehicle is modified and what motor gearbox is in the car, its a standard email they send, once answered it took a week to arrive in the mail for me

It does seeem a bit long, give them a ring to make sure they don't need more particulars from you.

So far I have been waiting:

8 weeks to get import approval

+ 8 weeks to get it loaded in a container (direct to Adelaide that turned out to be via Melbourne)

+ 8 weeks 3 days (and counting) for transportation from the US

Its parked 15 minutes away from home and my customs broker says its close any day now! :banghead:

Thanks for the feedback. The problem I have is that Matt(Shermatt) has submitted the application so I have not dealt with them personally. Matt has called them on a number of occasions (most recently 2 weeks ago) and they've promised to rush it through each time, to no avail. Perhaps I'd be better off putting in another application under my own name so that I can call them daily and annoy the hell out of them. Schumacher's next sail date to Melbourne is the eighth of May but at this rate my car will be left behind. I will not be shipping without approval, given my experience so far. At least now I know that 8 weeks is not normal.

I wasn't expecting a quick turn around by any means but I hope I'm not still waiting in another 4 months. I hope you get yours soon.

Wow, things have really slowed down again. My last car took 17 days from memory for import approval and 23 days on the boat from LA to Sydney. I picked it up in Newcastle in October a couple of days after that.
There was a bit of a period between import approval coming through and it leaving the US, but was only a few weeks at the most.

Don't forget you're dealing with a GOVT DEPT. They don't rush.

Not really i sent my approval on the 7th march and it came in the mail on the 30th march 23 days including posting times is good so i don't know why after 8 weeks he hasn't got his he sent his in feb, i did the paper work myself its not really that hard.

Give them a call and just ask them if they received it and I recon you will get it a week later.
That's what I did after waiting 40 days.

I suspect they will also wait till the container is full before they send it. If they have your car in a 40 foot container expect to wait longer - all depending on the rate of cars they're receiving.

Once full they then wait till the next available ship to your port, if your port isn't a common port there aren't as many ships sent there as often.

I called the Department of Infrastructure and Transport today and the VIN comes up as approved for import. :redpepper:
They can't send the approval to me as the application wasn't in my name but at least I know it has finally gone through. Now to get it on the water. I've tried 2 insurance brokers (Pirahna and my usual broker) to insure for the trip but they haven't bothered getting back to me after 2 calls so I'd hate to think what would happen if I actually had to make a claim. Looks like I'll have to pay the 2% the shipper charges for insurance.

Hi MachAttack, Great news that the car has received approval. Congratulations - it will soon be on the water.

When it comes to shipping insurance, we always go with the shippers insurance. May cost a bit more, but less complications will see the car put on the ship quicker.

No need to rock the boat!:smile01:

Matt, the guy I spoke to yesterday tells me it has been approved.

They must have run out of office gossip and decided to kill the boredom by doing some work. I can see some work cover claims coming up for RSI, those rubber stamps can get quite heavy you know. I've told Joey he can ship the car. Hope you're enjoying your holiday.

There was a guy who went to get a face lift. When they saw what was under it they put it back down.

Did you inspect your car personally? What condition is it in?
