Window mouldings how do you remove them
« on: September 08, 2008, 12:45:14 pm »
I have almost got my 66 coupe on the road but last friday I took it to the engineer to get it checked off, it rained heavily and I discovered a significant leak in the lower corner of the rear screen.  The rubbers are probably '66 vintage but I don't want to replace then just yet.  I want to get some mastic into the area but I can't get the stainless mouldings off - I have applied some force but don't want to damage them.  The workshop manual I have says to use a tool (can't remember the number) to  remove the trim.  I have tried paint scrapers but this hasn't worked.
Is there a trick to this so that the mouldings can be reused??

Thanks
Steve

Thanks Frank
How do you use the tool, does it go under the trim from the glass side?, do you need to use much force to get the trim off?
Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve.

Sorry, but I dont know - dont actually have one. Was looking at getting one to remove the trims for when I paint the car.

Cheers,
Frank.

It may sound rough but it works - I use a piece of wood about 1.5 inches wide against the under side of the moulding and then gently tap the wood with a hammer. Goes easy and take your time.

Oops just reread the post, ignore my 2 cents worth. I was referring to the driprail moulding, sorry.

Dont ask me I did a s#@t job with mine, they need some work now to get them back to good again. This is not a job to do when you are feeling impatient and tired after laying under your car all day:*

Steve,
Don't risk damaging them. The rubbers are cheap and the windscreen guys don't charge too much. I'd go that way.

Dave I am inclined to agree with you as I now have a couple of nice dents in one of the mouldings (Doh!!) where I tried to remove it with a tool.

Anyone know where I can get the vertical moulding for a 66 coupe (rear screen) for the left hand side??!!.

Woops!
I have a new rubber if required.
Just had front and back windows refitted.
I had one but got the extra when I bought seal kit.
