You will have to remove the mounts, and put leaf spring perches back on it, narrow it a couple of inches each side, and buy some Falcon lower shocker plates and U bolts, or cut the yubes off the 9", and off your 8", and put the 8" tubes and axles on the 9" pumpkin. Then it will still use the mustang shock plates and bolts, will look correct, and the short 8" axles will be stronger than the cut down 28sp 9" axles (assuming the 9" out of the HQ is 28sp)
You will probably need a new uni for the tailshaft too.

Rod-Tech on Hampstead Rd. can do the work for you. They did mine.

To swap the axletubes over from your 8" onto the 9" will cost about $300, plus and bearings, seals etc and sacrificing your old 8" housing. You will still have a 8" centre and 9" axles/brakes to sell.

What I did was buy a 9" housing ( can't remember what it was out of but I think it was American ). Took it and my original 8" housing to Rod-Tech. He cut  down the 9" and set it up so it would bolt straight in with out cutting up the 8" housing. Then I had a 9" centre rebuilt (lsd) bolted it in and the 8" axles fit straight back in ( as long as it is the same spline ).  I then wrapped the original 8" centre in glad wrap and put it and the 8" housing in the corner of the shed so the spiders had somewhere to play.

You would then have had to buy Falcon spring plates and shock plates, and 3" U Bolts, as the early mustang axle tubes neck down at the ends.
