My existing coil is oil filled and RACQ told me to shy off that?

Paul If your car has the original harness the resistor is built into the loam under the dash it's not a separate thing, its a piece of resistive wire. The way to tell if its' still there is to measure the volts on the coil while cranking to start, it should be battery volts ie 12v, once it starts it should drop to around 8v while running, important to get it right, or you'll be in strife again one way or the other. The on you have is non resistive type designed for XC with electronic ignition. It need 12v all the time.

I take your point, the RACQ guy did say resistive, now I come to think of it, I have made an error, I shall ask my supplier to change it if it has not already been sent, if it has I'll ask the installer to swap for something he has. RACQ also told me the oil cooled is not such a good idea though, any take on that?

Thanks, for a while there I thought I was breaking Faraday’s Law. :ouch:

I heard from the RACQ person, guess what? I need the part I ordered because I have electronic ignition, the part is on the way and I have booked it in for Friday for fitting.

That is what I did for my Mustang today. Thanks for all your help in your replies. The car is eating better than I am but that's O K.  :burnout:

My car starts better now and the auto electrician said the old coil was leaking oil, this coil should go places without overheating. Coupled with the bucket seats I fitted recently the car is coming along quite nicely. I had my front end checked while it was there, he said there was a little play in the lower idler arm but that was typical of these Mustangs. My car has a clean bill of health again. It is in deed a lucky little Mustang.

Today I visited a friend, who is currently repainting the hood and roof of his old Hilux..
It's previous owner did the job in the past, but used a paint-brush and WATER-BASED PAINT!!!
Needless to say it looks much better now although the colour-match is quite off, he's not really concerned as at least now it won't wash off! :lmao:

After that I went for a cruise for about an hour or so, stopped to top up the oil and hit the road again for another hour home...
I'm going to start tracking how much oil that little I6 is burning, usually I just check it when the valves start chattering and that seems to be about 100mi, but it would be nice to know how much oil I should be carrying..

Finally got around to acting on Griffs' tip and installed an extra fuel filter before my new fuel pump. Just got one of the clear plastic ones from Repco so I can see what's happening - also picked up a nice chrome one from Sydney Mustang Parts that I might put in down the track. Replaced the rubber fuel hose while I was at it.

The '68 coupe has the original 289 motor and 2V Autolite carby so replaced the damaged metal tags. Arrived yesterday from http://www.martiauto.com/tags.cfm  :smile01:

Yep,
5am and 5pm everyday, rain hail or shine.
Bloody German Shepherds love their routine.
At least there's no one else out in the morning so he can run free at the lake, chase ducks and drop a barkers nest on the dickhead's lawn down the street.

Pulled the heads off to chuck a set on that I had a go at porting....also put a new cam on lifters in.

While I was there I thought I'd check the bore and stroke....seems I have a 302...always thought she was a 289

Hopefully finish her off next weekend

Well shes done....had some issues around the timing chain and sprockets so I put in a new set. Ran her at 2000 rpm for 20 minutes as per instructions on running a cam in....needless to say she boiled.

After I let her cool off I refilled the radiator shut the bonnet and took her for a run.... man what a difference....lots more torque and when the revs get up a bit she boogies.....I think it will keep me happy till I finish the 347 stroker I'm starting to build.
After replacing the oil and filter I took her out on several more drives over the weekend.....I had a bigger smile each time.

I did run in to one problem though....the paint work is knackered and where I polished off all the oil and dirt I put on here doing the work I had some nasty shinny bits...now looks like I may have to polish her up so she shines all over.

Shampoo'd the petrol cap and polished the uni joints. Then I adjusted the windscreen washer followed by vacuuming the distributor. Finally I was able to refit the anti nuclear volume controller and washed out the carby with lukewarm soapy water.

Made a code analyser for the engine and transmission computers.

Not that I expected any it drives perfect.

Ordered some new suspension parts including front King KFFL-0 springs, 4 x Koni shocks and Whiteline 24mm heavy duty front sway bar. Once all that arrives and gets installed I'll get an extra leaf added to the rear springs and get them reset to the right height. Looks like a fun week coming up.  :thumb:

Do those plugs and make sure they are NGK ,its most likely the problem as that lead replacement is not plug friendly .

I had my leaf springs repaired. did you know we can see a set of leaf springs and think they are solid but as the attached photo shows they can have a hidden rust problem. That rust problem caused leaf springs to collapse and that made my car to sag and clunk and groan and act like a little b*tch until I had some new leafs inserted.

Spent the last couple days replacing the whole fuel system in my car as rust was coming through the per-carb filter. Changed the original 65 fuel lines to the 69-70 lines, not only are they 3/8, but the routing they take is away from the driveline/exhaust, and they were an easy install, only had to remove the rear wheel and drill a couple holes. Also changed the fuel tank, sender and put a Carter fuel pump up near the tank. Ran a ground cable from the front to the back with the power cable, and she hums :) The old fuel pump didn't like being grounded to the chassis near the tank, a ground line seemed to fix that.
While i was at it changed the carb to a Summit 600 carb, either my old carb was terrible or the new one is a godsend, but either way it feels like i bought a new car. Response is awesome, make it a lot of fun.
