Guys, made a grab for a 68 Fastback and the seller accepted. Hoping to pick it up in a week or two. Whacked a few bucks down for a holding deposit and will be checking it out this Friday. I am new to Mustangs so if there are any peculiarities with them you think I should be looking out for, shoot away. /All feedback greatly appreciated.
Keen as mustard to get this girl in my backyard...

I am new to Mustangs so if there are any peculiarities with them you think I should be looking out for, shoot away.

Since you already have a holding deposit down on it post up some pics so we can check it out, engine bay, underneath, boot, etc.

I'm sure many here will be able to give an appraisal.

It sounds more like you've bought it than going to inspect it?

What to look for. The three most important things (in order) :
1.Rust
2.Rust
3.Rust

Other than that it all depends on how original it is. I think you were after a pretty inexpensive/project car? It's all relative in that case but the most expensive repair work in these cars is fixing rust. Get the floor pan/chassis checked out thoroughly, check the cowl for leaks (same as Aussie plenum chamber problems).

It wouldn't hurt to ask someone who knows Mustangs to check it out for you.

Don't fall for an appraisal by internet, that's like buying a car in the U.S. based on photos. There's too much that can be lurking in these cars and no-one can give you a reliable opinion on what's thrown up in a forum. Putting some pics and info up for discussion could be a start.

Good luck. A 68 fastback is a great intro to Mustang ownership.

True, my point wasn't all about rust/bog, that inspection will have to be done in person, up close.

If we can see photos there may be things we can spot a mile off that look dodgy, wrong components, non-original components, (in case he wants the car to be original), bad repairs that may be expensive to fix, etc.

We could also give him a guide as to what he should be paying for the car in the condition it's in.

What is the vin? It is a 67, not a 68 going by those pics. Not that it matters which it is other than if the numbers say its a 68 then something is a bit sus.

Hi Bird
My advise would be if you have the means, take the $60+ k you will be putting into this car and buy something running that you could enjoy. I am not trying to sound smart ass but if you are new to this you should really look into what would take.Parts are cheap so to speak but from what I can see you will need pretty much everything. Good luck either way
Cheers

Here's the link:

http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/ford-mustang-1968-12330983

I'm not up to speed on 67/68 prices but it seems to me it's priced rather high for a project with an engine that's not running.

Anyone?

There's no pictures of what condition the interior is either.  If the feedback here isn't good and you're still keen you may try bargaining him down.

Yeah, it does have 67 louvres behind the doors and 68's have rear reflectors in the quarters, it could be a bit suss.

Hmm PROJECT,or reject .It is a 68 by vin ,67 side scoops ,67 rear panel between tail lights ,68 inside door handles .Thats been 4 sale quite a while . Bird thats a huge project ,save up some more money and buy a better one ,but each to there own ,what seems a good cheap buy may end up a nightmare . DONT GET SUCKED IN .

I forgot to say the rear 1/4 panels are not 68 ,side markers have either taken out ,or after market panels fitted .

Yep, this is what the rear should look like.

If you do it up as it is with all the 67 gear you'll end up with a Frankenstein 68 and that will affect the resale value.

Personally, I'd get something else.

Wow! I didn't know I had so many big brothers! LOL! Seriously, thanks guys for all that excellent feedback and thanks to the PM's as well. Interesting to discover she's a bitsa, but that only makes me want to fix her up even more. Hey, I am a Mustang tragic from way back! Thanks also for the potential dangers, unforseen costs, etc.
Will have a big look over it when I get down there.
The old girl has a story to tell us, I think, with those odd panels and what not else.
Can't wait till Friday.
Will let you know outcome
Cheers guys
Peter

Interesting to discover she's a bitsa, but that only makes me want to fix her up even more.

If it came out of the factory as a bitsa and you can document that, it's one thing but chances are they're panels that've been replaced due to accidents or totally rusted out and the owner has put in for whatever reason the wrong panels.

You really want to check out the frame rails, etc. Structural damage will be a nightmare.

If you really want to pursue it, armed with all the feedback here, start off by offering him half the price ...  I'm serious.  That's what he'll eventually sell it for.

Wow at $18K it makes what I paid for mine still seem an incredible bargain.

I agree with StephenSLR and others Bird - be careful ....no offense intended, but this car in it's current shape is probably only worth about $5 -7K as a project.....JMHO

it is definitely altered in it's qtrs. 68 had two style of rear qtr reflectors depending on it either being early or late 68 the rectangle ones are early model - mine which are angled at either end are the later ones.

Maybe the guy who had this did not like them ...who knows. My guess is the qtrs are a 67 without reflectors.

But if that's what you really want ...Good luck l really hope all goes well !

Hi Bird,
I looked into this car a few months ago... I believe it is a 67 model and not a 68 as advertised, too many things about this car just did not look right to me so I asked the seller for some photo's of the VIN stamped onto the car (I even told him where they were located) and the floor pans, engine bay etc, all I got was these two photos from the seller and it just confirmed in my mind not to touch this car with a barge pole!! As you can see in the photo's the door VIN/Trim/DSO Tag has been attached with the incorrect pop style rivets and the floor pans are full of holes... As per the advice from others in this thread this car would need way too much money spending on it and the VIN number just do not match the car so it would be a very bad investment. Sorry for being so negative about the car but I just don't want to see anyone get burnt on this one...
