Hi 69Candy, Thanks. Trip will surely be a blast. Sorry you are not coming to the Nationals.

Maybe you could come to the Roundup in Melbourne this October?
Nationals are in Perth next year. Fancy a trip across the Nullarbor? Was thinking about putting the car on the train and having an easy trip, but that would not be the done thing i am told.:nono::nono::smile01:

Cannot see anything to prevent us from taking the Red Mach1 to Newcastle now. Car drives very well. Not too many jobs to get her finished. At the worst we may have a bit left to do tomorrow before taking her for a good test drive then loading her onto the car trailer for the trip. Would like to see Brad and Jeremy get a bit of rest in before we leave.

Hi Dale, It is almost going to plan.

Managed to do a bit of buffing before the car went to the wheel aligner. They were on the ball and we had the car back in about one hour.

While Luke buffed away Brad and Jeremy fitted the front spoiler -

Brad cleaned the blue lettering off the tyres -

Then fitted the Decals in the engine bay and cleaned that up ready to roll.

Jeremy was busy fitting the door trim after adjusting the window on the blue mach1, then cleaning that car up. The blue mach1 is now ready for the trip and out of the workshop.

Ron had been busy doing last minute checks to his car, then up onto the car trailer -

He was a real happy chappy as he drove the car onto the trailer -

Then the stripe man turned up to fit the Mach1 stripes -

This delayed Luke with the buffing. So with about an hours worth of buffing left, Luke needed to leave for the day to do some personal business. Bugger! oh well....shyte happens.

Here is how we left the car late this arvo -

So we did not quite have the car finished today. We will all get an early start again tomorrow, and hopefully by lunchtime we can call it finished and load her up.

Looks like the 3M 1-2-3 series. Would that be right? Are you going to 3000 Trizact as well or stopping with a lower grade?
Don't mean to sound like a know it all, I've just been hitting up a few detailing/painting forums lately and reading and learning lots!

Hi Chris/Sally, Glad you called in.
It has been the mother of busy weeks on all fronts. Where did the week go?

Not sure which compound Luke is using. It is different to what he normally uses and it really does bring up a beautiful shine. Will take a close up photo of the bottle tomorrow.

Ash, Good to see you have been checking out those detailing/painting forums.
Due to our deadline, i think Luke is just going to finish buffing the front panels tomorrow and then perhaps go over it with some Menzerna Final Finish P106FF. That will have to do for now. Have to load the car by lunchtime tomorrow.
Might take my Flex Polisher with us and if needed i will go over it with Menzerna PO85RD on a black pad once we get to Newcastle. See you there.

I just saw the bottle which I thought looked like one of the 3M bottles.

I've found it all fascinating, so many tips from so many people who know what they are doing!

I'm aiming to be there Sunday at the moment. Should be with a group of maybe 5-6 Mustangs. I'll keep an eye out for all the cars I recognise!

This has been a great thread Rod,

congrats to you and the boys on all the hard work being done to cross the finish line.

I wish your boys were over here, as getting people and companies to work on schedule is about as easy as holding back the tide with a sand castle.

J1

Oh and by the way, I can't beleive none of you S.A. guys have been charged with attemted murder with the Regency crew. Is there only one place this can get done in S.A.

Hi J1, Glad you are enjoying the Thread. Guess the idea with Threads like this is to give intending restorers an idea of what is involved.

Jeremy, Brad, Luke and Ron have all worked their guts out on this car over the last couple of weeks in an attempt to have it ready for the Nationals. The boys are extremely tired!
Luke has it extra hard. He lives at Murray Bridge which is about 100klm away. Takes him an hour and a half just to get to work each day.

The list of jobs to do is now very small. Finish Buffing, fit external mirrors, fit door trims, fit sill mouldings, bonnet scoop, bonnet moulding. Not sure why the quarter panel extension on the rear lhs was removed. Hope it was to clean the buffing compound, but fear it may have been scratched.

Sounds like there is no sense of urgency in Mexico. Bet there are a whole lot less heart attacks too! That is unless you are the one waiting to have something done.

The Regency Inspection Station covers the metropolitan areas. Inspections in Rural areas are probably just as harsh. I believe the Inspectors work on a Roster system each week to travel throughout SA.
They see it as their job to ensure no sub standard cars are registered here. Makes a bit of a mockery of the process when you see so many ferals driving around in clapped out unroadworthy heaps of shyte! Oh well.... that is a car restorers life in SA.

Hope to be able to post "The Money Shots " later today.

We are making good progress. Here are the boys hard at it -

Fitting bonnet pins at the moment -

This is how to polish a mirror -:smile01:

Almost ready to fit the mirrors -

Rear Extension has been repainted and fitting. Hope Jeremy has the stripe -

A few more random shots -

Chris/Sally and Ash, I checked on the compound -

The paint feels super slick after using this compound. Probably helped by the fact the paint has been oven baked. I don`t think it will need any further polishing. No time anyway.

Still a few jobs left which will take a couple of hours. We are on the home straight.:yellowpepper:

I hope you don't mind me asking, do you know if you guys go right through to compound No.3? I had heard some people simply stop at No.2 and also that 2500 grit is more then enough to stop at too? I know each person has their own preference, it sure is great to see the final result start to evolve. It's looking great!!

Hi Dale, Thanks for the well wishes.
Think we have prepared the cars as much as possible. Still a little concerned about water over the road in low lying places. Sure the highways are open. I am concerned for those driving concourse cars going through wet and slushy roads.
You will know the stories while we are away. Will start a new Thread.
Silverware? Dunno. There are some gorgeous cars going over. Hope that somebody can bring something back.

Hi Mark, The boys are very tired and can certainly do with the rest. Jeremy`s back has been playing up something chronic. He is on some very strong painkillers to get through each day. Brad will drive the Blue Mach1 over and Jeremy will drive the Territory. Should be an easier trip for him that way.

Jeremy says there is no danger of speeding in the convoy. SA Mustang drivers must be slowies!:smile01::bolt:

We hope to enjoy the trip. Look out for the new Thread.

Hi Ash, Luke used 1500 grit to wetrub the Mach1. There was only time to do a one stage polish with the 3M Compound. If he had more time, then he would have followed up with a Finessing Compound. This is the one he uses -

It would be very rare to see a spray painter go to a third stage. They generally hate buffing!

With our cars i normally take over after the spray painter has done 2 stages. I have a Flex Forced Rotation Orbital Polisher and use this together with Menzerna Polishes to give the cars a 3 stage Autopian Polish - That is a real show car shine!
Takes about 15 hours per car. Will do this to the Red Mach1 upon our return from the Nationals.

Hope that helps to clarify.

That's fantastic Rocket, I really appreciate you explaining that further. I can sit here and read pages and pages of info but sometimes a few sentences from a pro can put you quickly on the right track.

We are looking forward to getting some rest tomorrow before packing up the cars.
Will pass on your best wishes to all the SA crew on the trip.

:yellowpepper:

Well... At least as finished as possible with the time constraints.
It was another long day. Very early start and the car left our premises at 7pm tonight.

After lunch we fitted the bonnet scoop -

Then the delicate task of fitting the rear louvre -

Followed by the stripe on the rear extension -

hmmmm... Some bubbles ( lots of em ) developed under this stripe after a couple of hours. Shyte... oh well ... cannot do anything about it now!

Next it was up in the air again to finish securing a couple of lines, followed by a thorough detail. We are very impressed with Dave Bills Exhaust work -

Luke then painted the Auto Transmission pan and the engine sump -

Brad then tidied up the engine bay -

He found a novel way to straighten out the cables for the bonnet pins -

Next it was time to fit the door trims -

Followed by the new Rimblow Steering Wheel, then clean up the interior -

After a few more bits and pieces were finished off, it was time to take her outside for a wash -

Finally the car was finished. I am so proud of the work Brad, Jeremy and Luke put into getting it to this stage. These last 2 weeks saw an absolute monumental effort -

Then it was time to take some happy snaps. Daylight was rapidly fading by this time -

Time to load her up on the car trailer -

After a very hard few weeks - this was a lovely sight -

Many more photos at this photobucket Link -
