Time for an update

The compressor and sanding machines in the car factory have been quiet for a few weeks since Andy left. We were sorry to see him go. But our classic car business cannot rely on any one person.

Good Panel Beaters/Spray Painters are hard to find. After advertising for a few weeks we had a response from Luke - A qualified man with 22 years experience. Eureka!

We are now right back into it! First project is a 69 Mach1. It is a 351 T bar Auto, which we bought locally from a chap in Whyalla. Bonus for us is the car is already registered in this state so no head spins from the rego people.

The car was driven into the workshop at 7 am this morning. Brad and Luke wasted no time getting into it. By the time i arrived at 9 the car was already up on the hoist to remove the tailshaft, exhaust, handbrake cable, fuel tank etc. The engine and transmission were out of the car by lunchtime.

Here are some photos -

Does not appear to be any rust in the undercarriage, but hard to tell with the thick undercoating, which is also coated in quite a few years of oil leaks

The bootlid is rusted and so will be replaced. Doors have a bit of rust in the bottoms. We will strip it all bare and see what we are working with.

MachAttack

Did I see this one on Ebay recently? The rusty bootlid and doors look familiar.

Love a good thread detailing a restoration - the fact it is my favourite Mustang just makes it that much sweeter. Look forward to regular updates.

Nice car. I recon it came in the same container as mine a while back. Looked to be a very solid car, unlike mine!!

mwizz

Thats great news Rod, another car to visit

rocket

Matt, I guess that is why Jeremy sent the seats off to the trimmers last week. He wants to make sure they are nice and comfy for you and Sheri.:burnout:

MachAttack, Yes, this is the car that was on Ebay a few weeks back. Jeremy rang the owner and made a fair offer for the car. The owner rang back a few weeks later and said come and get it. Ripper!

Boss69Hog, We agree with you. 69`s rule!!!
I had the Mach1 seats from the blue Mach1 in my Grande for a few weeks. Very comfortable with the high backs. Had to put the low back Grande seats back in last week. Seems uncomfortable now. Taking the Grande to work tomorrow to swap over to the Mach1 seats out of the red car.

69 candy, Not sure if it is the same car that was in your container. It looked reasonably good and shiny from 20 ft, but up close you could see the rusty boot lid, doors and bottoms of the rear quarters. How is yours coming along?

mwizz, You are welcome to call in anytime to check progress. How are you going with the Flex Polisher? Cranking mine up at work tomorrow to polish a 4 wheel drive from the tyre shop next door.

Some more photos taken this arvo -

Sized these photos a bit smaller than the ones in the first post because i thought the bigger ones were a bit "in your face". Dunno - which size is best?

Thats amazing progress Rod.

I havn't used the Flex machine as yet as it supposed to be a Fathers Day present and I don't have any pads or polish as yet. Plus I still need to learn how to use it properly so I don't stuff anything up.

rocket

Mark, I have plenty of pads at work. You can borrow some until you get yours.
I am starting to run low on polish so will order more tomorrow. But i can lend you some of mine in the meantime.

Come on down and i will give you some quick lessons with my Flex.:thumb:

By the way, when is fathers day?

Mark, I am cranking up the Flex again today to give this car a 3 stage Menzerna polish -

It is my new drive car. 6 Litre, 6 speed auto. Jeremy drove it back from Melbourne yesterday. Goes like the clappers.

JT, I think Jeremy wants to keep the Blue Mach1, but the Red Mach1 will be up for sale as soon as it is finished.:burnout:

dalex, i do not believe that Jeremy will part with the blue Mach1. Every time he goes home from work his 3 year old son asks him "where is my car?" - meaning the blue mach1. Think it will be a family favourite!

However, no reason the red mach1 can`t be painted blue. We will be in Melbourne to attend the roundup this month. Hoping the blue mach1 will be ready by then - if so, jeremy will bring it over. Come and check it out. Be good to meet up with you.

Work is continuing on the red mach1. We had the undercarriage, inside floor, boot area and engine bay media blasted -

Floors and inside the boot are pretty good -

A bit of work to do down where the floor drop off meets the petrol tank area

The front panel is good -

Nothing wrong with the LHS of the engine bay -

The RHS is not so good. Check out the crack across the centre of the tower and the standard rusted out battery apron -

We have already repaired the crack by drilling a small hole at the end of it and then welding it up. We also tapped the tower supports back into the right spot and welded them to the tower. Problem solved.

Other rust repairs are limited to the bottoms of both rear quarters which will cut out and have repair panels welded in. Other than that there is a patch required inside the car just in front of the RHS wheelhouse. All in all not much rust in this car, but shows the beauty of having them media blasted to expose any problems.

Progress is slow at the moment because we have a couple of small jobs on the go. Can`t complain - they help to pay the rent.

Pleasant surprise upon walking into the car factory this morning. The engine bay repairs are completed and now in etch primer -

This morning the car was put up on the rotisserie ready for cutting, patching and welding the required sections -

Here are some pics of the " not so good " areas

Been a lot happening lately - time to update this Thread -

Engine bay is now in Primer with guide coat ready for wet rubbing -

Minor rust repair patch welded in back floor -

Here are some shots of how the piece in front of the rear wheel housing was cut out, replacement section formed, then welded in -

We had a nasty surprise with both rear quarter panels. Stretched metal, lots of bogged up dents and pick holes left -

Only good option is to replace both full quarters -

Time consuming job. Tomorrow Luke will refit the door, front guard and boot in order to line up the new quarter for the side he is currently working on.

In the meantime, Brad is cleaning up and painting some front end bits and pieces. Most items will be replaced with new components -
