1969 mach 1 351w Starting Issues...
« on: May 10, 2011, 04:47:28 pm »
Hi Guys,
Firsltly i am not too familure with old carby engines. However, my issue is starting the old girl.

She will quite happliy crank over 10 times before she actually fires up. Firstly is there anything i should be doing before i start her up,  i.e. pump the gas pedal 3 times and hold it etc... Any suggestions?

Secondly, what seems to be the issue, its a a stock 351w with Holley carb. Not sure what carb model but i will look into it. Would the choke be the issue? how do i check it and adjust it? Any help would be appreciated.

Danny

Hi Danny.

Could be one of several things. Normally I give the gas pedal 2 pumps , and let it go, then turn it over . Works a charm on both my carby cars - both auto and manual choke.

Let us know more about the carby for starters.

Could be ignition, but I am thinking carby at this stage.

Cheers,
Frank.

Dany, it might help if we know what type of choke mechanism is fitted as well.

When its cold and you pump the throttle before starting, does the choke butterfly automatically close at the top or is it cable fed?

yeah i will look into that also, i honestly dont know.. What should be the case when car is cold? When i pump the butterfly closes automatically if its an auto choke.. Otherwise if its cable what happens? should there be a lever in the car somewhere??

P.S. Does auto choke mean it is electric??

If its a manual choke, yes there will be a pull out mechanism typically in the car. When you pull it out the cable closes the choke butterflies. not fully closed mind you, otherwise the car won't run of course.

Cheers,
Frank.

If it's an auto choke and cold the top butterfly in the carby would be 1/2 to 3/4 closed. When you press the accelerator a bit the butterfly will almost close fully.

An auto choke could be electric (for heat) or a tube gets heat from the exhaust manifold.

Ok, its a Holley 670cfm 80670-1 electric choke.  Took the intake off when engine was cold choke butterfly was wide open, pumped the gas pedal and no movment on the choke.. Tried to start twice, no-go! I physically closed the choke, it started great and once warmed and pushed gas pedal and it opened up a treat. not sure what the issue is here guys??

Danny, has it got a power feed to the choke?  Check the connections.

Yeah has power connected... Seems a bit jammed actually so I have wd40ed the choke rod and butterfly. Just letting it all cool down and see what happens tomorrow.

Power needs to be switched ignition 12v power preferably from inside the car. Good idea to have a 10 amp fuse in series too.

Make sure it is not getting power from the feed that goes to the ignition coil - if you are running a standard ignition (non electronic) then that feed will have a resistor in series dropping the voltage down to 6v. That might cause the choke butterflies to stay open.

I believe you could also run a feed from the starter relay to thru an inline fuse then to a seperate relay that then feeds the electric choke.

Cheers,
Frank.
