Hello from Tulsa Oklahoma,

We stopped at Galena Kansas for lunch.

Here's some photos:

Chicago

They were filming Transformers 3 - this is the set.

2 of the stages at Lollapalooza, there are 8 in total these are the largest.

The Mustang I'm driving across the US.

I'm travelling in a group here's our cars.

We went to Troy's Rad Rod's workshop, I liked this one the best of what was on display.

They were rebuilding a Mustang Fastback among other cars.

After visiting the House of Blues this is a scene moments away at the river.

What the hell is this thing?

Hello from Pontiac.

We were taking photos of this biker bar, everything has murals here, the owner saw us drive into town (Nilwood), when he rode past he saw us taking photos so let us in to have some drinks.  $2 beers and we almost bought him out of stubby coolers.

It's the clubhouse of the Iron Sleds motorcycle club.

I have so many photos, these are just a few.

Great photos, thanks for posting Stephen. Quite a road trip you're on, quite a convoy too - 13 Mustang convertibles ! That's a logistical feat on it's own.

Feel free to share your own travel experiences, tips, etc.

This could end up a good thread.

Prior to the road trip I checked out some other places:

Toronto and Detroit

Toronto is a lovely place, checked out some Metal bands on a Wednesday night.

Detroit is a ghost town, such lovely old buildings and they're all empty.  I took a few shots from the people mover (skyrail) showing the inside of one.  I guess this place was bustling last century.

The streets are very clean and safe though you do see quite a few black people just hanging around, some begging for change but I'm here on a Thursday and Friday afternoon and it's very quiet.

I didn't have time to go to the Ford or Chrysler museums - a pity.

Public transport is almost non-existant.

I did go to General Motors which seemed to be alive, they have a food court and some shops downstairs which is quite modest.

I ventured a little out of town to the I-Rock, a venue that has the walls filled with autographed guitars, photos and memorabilia, they've all played or visited.

Julliette Lewis & band (they played at the Magic Stick)

Driving down from Tulsa we stopped at McJerry's art gallery, you may want to check his work online.

Bike museum somewhere along the way

The Triumph the way it was delivered, has never been assembled.

Oklahoma city

I went to check out the Mayhem festival, so many cars around it, I found a carpark ~ 10 mins walk away.

The event was sold out, hung out the front chattin to the country folk & listening to Lamb of God's set, you could hear it really well (open air festival)

'You got an accent, you from Arkansas?'

LoL.

Err... a bit further south mate.

I didn't hang around too long and I remembered the bombing that took place here so went to the memorial.

Part of the original building

I went for a drive through Bricktown (a section of downtown), it was quite busy, I couldn't get a parking spot so just took a drive through, it was 99 deg F outside, during the day I recall it reading 106F.

Viva Las Vegas, this place is like Disneyland.

We drove to from Kingman AZ to Ludlow CA then doubled back and drove through the Mojave desert, that was a great drive, the temp was around 110 deg F in the old scale.

Arrived in Vegas and went to the Las Vegas rock awards, saw Lemmy, Frank Banale, Vinnie Appice and a few others on stage giving out awards and the finale was Dee Snider and Lita Ford with members from local band's playing 'I Wanna Rock'.

Will post pictures as soon as I can find a decent public computer that isn't locked or when I get back to Sydney.

I've arrived back home safely.

I'll try to pick up with some highlights from where I left off but I have too many.

For those that don't know Route 66 doesn't exist as a highway anymore, the last section was decomissioned in 1985. Our tour guide did his best to have us see and drive on as much of the 'mother road' as possible. Some parts are blocked off and private property, a marine base now exists on one part of it and 5-10 miles of it is disappearing each year.

We checked out quite a few car museums

The latter part of the tour saw the countryside change as we were driving through desert including a stint through the Mojave.

There was a cultural component to this tour as well, we visited Sky City, a native American village on top of a mountain.

More scenery along the way, some of it is like a moonscape.

Wigwam Motel, the Wigwams are rooms. If you saw the Pixar movie Cars, so much is inspired by the sites and people on R66, in the movie they substituted traffic cones for the wigwams.

Standing on the corner of Winslow Arizona - yes the corner is now famous from the Eagles song.  That statue is one of them holding a guitar.

We stayed at a hotel overlooking the Grand Canyon.

There is so much to see and do.  I'd encourage anyone who hasn't been to get on the plane and do a drive yourself holiday and see a bit of a brilliant world.

In Santa Fe we took a detour from R66 and visited Madrid, Maggies Diner was built for the movie Wild Hogs and the woman who owns the land decided to keep the building and install electrics and plumbing and turn it into a Wild Hogs gift shop. It's now a drawcard attraction to the town even though the locals are petitioning to have it removed.

Oatman, an old mining town.

The tour ended in Las Vegas another detour from R66. We visited the Shelby Museum.

I drove a 650 horsepower Nascar. We drove them solo chasing a pace car trying to keep 3 car lengths behind. My top speed was 126 m.p.h.

The tour finished in Vegas with a drive around the city in the F650 limousines.
One broke down and was quickly replaced by the white one.

Elvis Presley's Lincoln Continental.

The tour finished in Vegas but I decided to extend the days on the Mustang and continue to Los Angeles, I started Route 66, saw so much of it so just had to finish it properly.

In L.A. the Sunset Strip Music Festival happened to be on. The second time the Sunset Strip has been closed to traffic. A stage was at each end and the clubs in between were also hosting live bands.

Slash was given an award from the SSMF, he did his show then was joined by special guest Fergie who did their number, Heart's Barracuda and Paradise City.

The Smashing Pumpkins headlined the main stage.

A few hours later I caught Adler's Appetite, they are killer!  They do all the old  GnR songs. I'm not a fan but GnR songs actually do sound good without that whiny ginger one singing.

My last day I spent driving Mulholland Drive, Malibu and I closed the day at Santa Monica Pier/beach before driving to the airport to return the Mustang.

Yeah, Dale supplied us each with a GPS, mobile phones & two way radios and even with all that, it only takes a set of traffic lights to lose the flock.
