Route 66 tour
« on: April 20, 2010, 11:45:29 am »
Hi all,

I was watching Classic Resto's on the weekend.  Fletch mentioned he'll be doing a few shows along Route 66 and suggested to check out the link.

I've looked into it and am considering going. You get to drive a Mustang along Route 66.

Route 66 tours

What I'd like to know is, if I find a car I want to buy when I'm in the US, what is the procedure?

Can it all be done from over there?  I'm not 100% certain if I'll buy but you never know.

Anyway this is the reply I got from the Route 66 organiser.

====================

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for watching Classic Restos & for your interest in our fantastic Route 66 Tour from Chicago, Illinois to Barstow, California, ending in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This is by far the best Road Trip Tour of Route 66 available and we are very proud to be working with Fletch and the Classic Restos team.

Classic Cars – well I can promise you this, come along on tour with us & you will see thousands, & most of them for sale.

Although our tour is focused on Route 66, and the nostalgic road trip experience that it is.

As a Classic Car owner & lover, you can be sure they factor into every tour I put on.

In fact I doubt it is even possible to drive Route 66 & not see hundreds of classic cars.

If you have checked out our basic itinerary online at www.route66tours.com.au then you might notice the lack of details.

Up until now that has been on purpose as we want people to come along on tour for Route 66 itself.

However we are in the middle of upgrading the itinerary & it will soon be showing more detailed information on what is offered along the way.

For a start we include 2 very special workshop tours that are invitation only.

The first is the workshop of one of the world’s best Hotrod builders.

The other is a workshop that has a focus on Classic Mustangs, and they would easily be the best in the USA.

We also take in several Classic Car Museum’s and collections.

On top of that we stop at one of the largest classic car lots I have ever seen with many hundreds of cars for sale, if not thousands.

We take in another smaller yard that has cars that range from wrecks to $15,000 cars for sale.

Then in Vegas we go and have a look through Carol Shelby’s Museum and workshop as well.

Again, this is a fantastic tour of Historic Route 66, and that is our focus, but as it happens the boom time for the Route was the 50’s and 60’s, & as a result Classic Cars & even Vintage Cars factor in every trip down the Mother Road.

Please don’t hesitate to give me a call or email me directly if you have any questions.

I look forward to showing you Historic Route 66, The Mother Road.

I'll be going and if everything goes right I hope I can bring back a nice '66 fastback.

I've asked this in the first post, let's say I find one I want to buy when I'm over there, what do I do?

Should I plan ahead over here as if it's going to happen and arrange contacts or can it all be done ad hoc from the US?

I've paid a deposit for this tour.

The price is for twin share - sharing the driving and accomodation.

I'm going to pay a supplement for my own accomodation but looking to share the driving to reduce the cost.

Anyone here keen?

Greg..  It can be done fairly cheap, even if you hire your own Mustang.  I've done the trip a few times now and places like the Shelby museum and workshop are for free.  I was there last week.

There will be more on Classic Restos later in the year as Fletch is doing the run again, this time around August.

For those who think it is expensive, it actually will never be cheaper than it is now, especially with the low cost airfares available at present.

I know it will promote "shock/horror" but you do not have to do the trip in a V8 Mustang... ;x

A V6 will give you great gas mileage, but maybe even a van ;w with 4 on board would reduce costs a lot (remember to make that your family or very close friends that can survive living together for the time).

Even though I'd like to save money on doing that, as the Holden (V8's til '88?)  ad used to say, "There's nothin' like a V8"

It may be "unique' to Aussies doing the journey in a late model Mustang, but for Americans it is just another cheap late model car that does not get a second glance. From the outside hardly anyone would be able to pick the difference. Reducing your fuel bill by 1/3rd would sound good to me. Buy some GT & V8 badges from a dealer before the journey if you want the pics to look good.

You will be filling the tank on a V8 at least every day. 16 gallon tank, you will get around 20mpg if you treat it right (bet you don't), so do the math.

As I have posted in other threads, we did the Route 66 trip in a 65 Lincoln Continental, cool car that was a topic of conversation wherever we pulled up for the night, refueled or stopped to shop. Seems everyone loves a "classic".

We (Carol & I) completed many long trips around the USA with our RHD 69 Mach1 when it was over in the US (visited 35 States). Helped us get into many places where normally we would not have been allowed.

I feel the same way about them too.

I may just look into getting some 'iron' to hire but I doubt hire companies would consider them reliable enough.

Do you know any that would lease one for the trip?

Why not get to the US early & have a few leads on a decent car that you would consider buying? That would work out way cheaper than a rental.

Buy in a place like CA or nearby state & drive up to Chicago via Yellowstone etc, then do the trip on 66 back to LA. If you still love the car, take it home with you.

I wish I had enough time to do that.

May do that another time though.

Takes a week to get up there from CA if you are stopping & taking "happy snaps". Shorter time if driving the I40 directly over to Chicago (3-4 days).

You really need 2 + weeks to do Route 66 properly (Chicago to LA) as there are 3 differing alignments used over the years & you should drive them all (we did), sometimes back tracking 3 times to do so. Stopping at all the "unique" & "quaint" places along the way all takes time.

So lets work on 15 days for the trip down from Chicago, work on US$150 per day for motels & food, 16 gals of fuel per day (in a V8) at around US$3.10 per gallon, being around another US$50 per day, add car rental to that (expensive for one way rental, so would need to get a car at your entry point to the US drive it up there & back, then give it back at the rental point upon departure), getting expensive without buying trinkets.

This thread is probably as good a place as any to ask, Does any one have a picture of a spot along route 66 (signposted) that a car could be photoshopped into? My wife wants one so she can have a bit of a play with it.

My next big journey across the Us will be on the Lincoln Highway. This was the first trans continental road in the USA & probably one of the first in the world.

Some info here,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_Highway

Or just Google the road & it brings up many sites. I purchased the book by James Lin when I met him back in 2002. I have travelled on most of it from Nevada to San Francisco, but wish to do all the remaining road from NY to San Fran. Of course I will need to do it in a "classic". May have to talk my friend into doing another trip in the 65 Lincoln Continental as he still owns it.

Hey all,

Am back home.

We made the news in Missouri - there were several errors in the report, e.g. it should read Portland Concrete, the journo must've had difficulty with our accent.

It was a lot of fun.

Classic Restos is screening the first part of the Route 66 special tonight on TVS (Ch 31, etc.) 7.30 pm, it's repeated Sunday morning.

If you see the group of Mustangs, I'm in the black one.
