Melbourne Hail Storm 7th March
« on: March 07, 2010, 08:06:06 am »
Hi All,

Its been mentioned in a few posts, but while we were were working on Rick Champions Eleanor (Project Casper - The Eleanor ghost thread) the weather turned to sh1t.

My fastback was caught in it for about 5 minutes while we scambled in a huge panic to get it under cover.
We have checked it for dents under flourescent lights and she appears to have taken the beating well.
We were worried about the back window smashing as mini golf balls pelted us and our cars.
When we got her under cover and went inside, me and J1 realised our back and arms were covers in welts where these golf ball hail stones had pelted us.
A bunch of us copped them in the head while we trying frantically to get my mustang under cover. OUCH!!!

Was looking on you tube, and I found a decent video of what happened in a instant.

Yeah, on closer inspection it has quite a few small dents in roof and bonnet. Ah well!
Wonder if Geoff's parents car has copped it too?

my GT Falcon and 66 Fastback were tucked away in the garage BUT my new (3000km) XR6 turbo was outside and looks like a orange peel. windscreen cracked in 7 places. house took a pounding....8 windows gone. hail stones measuring 90mm across !!!!

We are in Lysterfield..think we coped it pretty bad. Channel 7 chopper been hovering over the house and estate all morning.

LSV (insurer of XR6) tell you to call back in business hours, but got onto Wesfarmers Insurance via the web and rang the Sydney number for Lumley Insurance and spoke to a nice guy Doug...............

ANyone know what the go is with hail damage......my car is pretty bad....will they write it off ??

As you know insurance companies work in a way that is most economical for them.  If the car can be fixed cheaper than replacing it then unfortunatley this is what will happen.

Hopefully your damage is bad enough that they replace it for you.

Also this is a little scary but I have a 66 Fastback, a 2007 GT and I am also an accountant.  I also have a 69 fastback so there is a difference.

Good Luck.

Darren

stang8, we are in Narre Warren, just a stones throw away from you.
My wife said we had little or no hail here and a little bit of heavy rain only.........go figure!
Her car however was with me at Caretakers house in the western suburbs out in the elements.
It has some hail damage, what can I say!

I was at work in Flinders Lane yesterday and finished at about 1430. Was at the intersection of Flinders/spencer streets when it started. Quickly drove under cover and watched it unfold.

It was intense! I was only driving my $hitheap so couldnt care about dents. Some of the new cars would be covered in dents but was thinking some of the older stangs/falcons would be ok due to the thicker sheet metal like thirstys example.
After it I drove down the westfate to get home, cars hiding under bridges everywhere, it was really odd.

DOZX, my wifes car is a 03 Hyundai Elantra Sports Hatch which was parked with all the Mustangs and Falcons at Caretakers house. It has, by the sound of it, received by far the least panel damage. These cars all got the same treatment. ;w
You would think the Elantra would have caved in but I am actually quite impressed and relieved.:(

With hail damage on your average family type car (corolla commodore falcon etc) If it is insured for 10k or over it will most likely be repaired. The best advise I can give is be confident in who is repairing your car. PDR is an option on some cars but can be risky if not done correctly. Conventional methods (repair & repaint) if done properly are the go. Be wary of places offering excess discounts/loan cars they arent free & the money comes from somewhere to cover it.

The metal used in Elantras is very high tensile, stands up well to hail. Once it is hammered hard enough to dent its a bast%rd to file up;}

The hail damage could have been a lot worse, mainly on the bonnet, a little bit on the roof and a couple  of minor ones on the boot lid, I feel luckier than others.

I'll now found out about LSV's claim process.

regards
jonn

Dried the car off today, and found a heap more dents, in the roof, bootlid, front pillar, screen moulds, doors, even the 1/4 moulds were hit hard enough to bend the spear, and move the trim, and pull up the paint!

Just had a look at my Father in law's EB Fairmont & it's stuffed. Dents all over the hood, roof & boot.

Igalop,

Just a couple on the ute, bonnet, roof & a beauty on the lid.
Could of been worse for all of us.
Nice clap of thunder a second ago, so possibly time to sign off the pc.

Be safe all.
Cheers, Geoff;1

Just checked the EA. Not that I'm really worried. No damage.
And the Prado was out at the time for about 20 sec and no damage.
Was funny watching the Mrs run out in the hail to drive
her car in the garage.
Goeff I think you copped the big balls mate.
We in Preston only got small balls..........:+
Cheers.....

Bugger it.
Had a good, proper look at the fastback today.
Bonnet OK.
Roof OK.
Pillars OK.

Boot has about 10 small hail dents.
I have checked where the dents are and none are on boot frame seems so I I got onto paintless dent removal guy whos coming out next week. I have used them before and they do a pretty good job as long as you find they right guy.
I would say the boot lid must be a repro as the other panels held up OK.
But when I raced to the car to get under cover, the sound of those hail stones hitting the roof was gut wrenching.

As Igalop has mentioned, our hail stones must have been not as bad as elsewhere.
After watching the news, my car looks awsome.

Steph, sorry to hear about your cars damage. You seemed pretty calm. I only copped a damaged boot lid and I have felt sick all day.

I have only owned the car a week and its got ghost stripes so not an easy repaint!!!!!! We'll see what the PDR guy comes up with. I would think I will have to wait in line
