Styled steel wheels
« on: January 31, 2010, 06:52:05 am »
G'day guys,
My '66 Fastback came with a set of used styled wheels that are correct for my year , ie. black outer trim with chrome trims however they need refurbishing. My question is how to tell if they're original because im happy restoring original wheels but less so if they're repro's , also does anyone have any recommendations for wheel shops and what it would roughly cost? The wheels dont have any damage , they only need cosmetic restoration.
Thanks all...
Jim

Big job doing this and you will need a really good wheel guy.  The original wheels are rivetted, so they must be removed and that process generally causes problems - cutting/drilling into the rim.  The re-fitting of the rechromed centre is the next problem - reinstating the rivets and having a wheel that can be balanced.

Better to buy a new repop set.

JAMBO.

BIG JOB to do as previously stated, but first make sure they are actually originals or your waisting your time.

Way to tell is on the rivet side there should be a K/H stamping and a size of rim stamped on them. Might take some cleaning to locate that depending on surface rust.

I have had 2 originals restored through a contact in the US to marry up with my NOS examples and they turned out perfect. Costly but well worth it for the car they went on.

Best regards.

This mob at Ballarat used to offer refurb services, maybe one of the Ballarat members can advise if they were as good as in the 90's.

Hey Jim,
maybe a big job but at the end of the resto, it'll be good to say you have original wheels on it, especially styled steel. Much nicer feeling.  I'm currently restoring the original 15X6" wheels and trims for mine. I dont really like the look but I'll be satisfied they were on the car when it rolled out of the factory.:f

Try Neway Wheel Repairs.

I was going to use them to widen my 12 slotters but went a different way. They specialise in repairing and modifying wheels.

Still may not be cost effective, but worth a phone call.

Kind Regards,

John
