possible new 78 cobra owner

Morning all,
just looking at purchasing a 78 mustang cobra II across here in Dubai. By looking at some other posts on here there only seems to be about 10 in aust. This one is fully loaded with the ttops, ac, pwr steer, 4 speed and 63000 miles. i just need to confirm its a cobra from the buck tag. then will probably purchase.

My main concern is obviously parts back home, from memory the only larger 4 stud fords that may share components would be the early 250 cortinas, but they were all euro based. Has any other owners found any compatability from other fords at all?

My early years were all GMH based so I am a bit rusty on the blue oval.

Appreciate any help, but may be a delay in respones as we are 7 odd hours behind you. If i purchase will post some pics up.

thanks

parts will be your biggest issue here;  not too many places deal in post 73 mustang bits.

What side of Oz do you plan on basing yourself??

4 stud fords? you talking about at the wheels? you can't ride a 302 on 4 studs here... has to be 5 stud. Dubai might be a different story. with their "magical" taste in buildings, maybe their car laws are "magical" also!

anyway, good luck with it. maybe the cobra paint job might make the 78 look alright.

Parts always seem to be available in the US for all makes and models. but just in case with the 78, i probably wouldn't go for much of a project with them. if it doesn't need any, it might be alright.

Any reason why 4 stud wheels must be changed to a 5 stud when running a 302?   just curious, as they were made like that from ford (v8 and all), and I've seen a few post '73 mustangs registered here with the four stud wheels and a v8.
Here is a 4 stud 79 mustang at the WA nationals  in 2008 (pretty sure it is a V8, with the air cleaner giving it away).

thanks for your help.

Mo/ will head back to queensland when finished up here and be based on the coast. it seems to be problem across in the states for sheet metal and other components as well. some aftermarket but not much

Tim/ all the II's were standard with 4 studs, the Fox body platform was also a 4 stud design all with the 302 option. as for the car laws, where could i start with this madhouse!

its pretty well restored with new paint, interior etc so someone else has done the hard work. Yet to go through with a fine tooth comb so after that and getting a marti report will let you know how i go.

cheers

i guess it could be a case of if it came from factory as a 4 stud v8, its ok. but if you convert to v8 from something smaller, you need the 5 studs.

The amount of wheel studs is irrelevant. It is the brake package thats is relevant when adding a V8, when converting early 4 stud cars to better brakes you end up using 5 stud because they are common. If you wanted to go to the trouble of coverting the bigger hubs & rotors back to 4 stud there would be no legal reason why you couldnt. This thing is a factory 302 so it doesnt matter anyway.

I could've sworn I saw a similar looking car in Auburn, Sydney near my work. The mechanic had been trying to sell it for ages. I'll sneak down during the week and see if I can spy it.

Hi, I know for a fact that Mustangs Unlimited in the U.S. sells parts for the 74 - 78 Mustang.  Best of luck coming from a proud owner of a 78 King Cobra. :thumb:
