generally at the back of the block on the top.
There should be a flat area the at the back of the valley.always has been for me .
some states motors just had a tag with no block stamping

You engine # will be here (where the tape is). You will need a mirror & flashlight to see it.

It will be the year, factory & then the consectutive unit # of your VIN.

Example 1R112000 (1 = 1971, R = San Jose, 112000 = your consectutive unit #)

Is the engine number found in the same place for all stang engines? Mine is a '66 manual coupe with a 289 block....but same problem, they coudnt find the engine number?
It looks like previous rego (Qld) used a number from the bell housing as the engine number (just 6 digits) but WA liciencing wont accept as needs to be stamped on the block.
If a 289 enigine number is in different place can somebody post a picture?
cheers

Ford in the US started having engine #'s on all motors in 1968/9. Early cars only the HiPo engines had #'s, the big blocks (FE's) had #'s.

The HiPo 289 motors (K code) were stamped on the Rh side on the block just above the sump. Your engine would not have had a # originally.

You may also find some more 1971 info here: the site is dedicated to 1971/ 429s, but the engine stamping may help.

Hi tsjc,
I have just gone through the same thing with trying to locate the engine number on my 70 Mach1 and the guys here certainly helped me.
The one thing I did find is that when my engine was stamped it looks like it was stamped in the wrong location. When the factory guy stamped my engine he stamped the head instead of the block, although still on the drivers side rear.
Attached is a picture taken from under the car looking up.

Cheers,
            Pauno

Hello tsjc7170
Some american blocks did not come with an engine number.
Which is no big deal. One should be allocated to you when you go and get the car regestered.
This was the case with me.
On the clevelends I have always found them on a flat machined surface just above the fuel pump.
Cheers........

Australian & US Clevelands (actually all Ford V8's) are stamped in differing spots. US Clevelands are where my pic above shows.

All American engines after 1969 had #'s as it was law by then.

Pretty common this - these guys who had been doing the job for years couldn't see the benefit in ANOTHER task being assigned and so as long as it was there somewhere they were ok - many cars got the number on the head rather than the back of the block. Blocks with no number are usually much more sought after,,,,
