Forgive for what is probably quite a dumb question. But I want to purchase the number plates for my car, but because it's begin restored it's not registered. Are you able to purchase number plates without the car?  The RTA myplates site just asks for your license number and that's it. You can pay for it and specify pickup location..Not sure if this would differ state by state but I am in NSW.

You can purchase number plates from the rta without having a car, as long as you have a valid drivers license.

This is the case for NSW, not sure about the other states.

Cheers

Chris

I'm keeping my choice secret until I secure it lol! but yeah it's going to be $440.. But my car is going to be at least another year.. so do i buy now or run the risk of loosing it? I've tried every combo for a normal one to no avail.. a friend called me the other day saying they saw an Eleanor with ELANOR cruising down George St!

In Vic the plates start at $300 and it's a one-off thing...

And you can get the plates without the car...
Black '69 CJ 4SPD car under construction (425/504)

Off track, but you'll get a laugh! When my son @ 16 was building his turbo 2lt Gemini, he ordered custom plates here in NSW@ $350/yr (11 years ago) &, so he didn't have to pay storage, we put them on my other car the "rice cooker" a lowered but stock except for 17" rims, 96 Celica. Plates were black on yellow "XCITME". I was about 47 yo then so I did get quite a few comments as you can imagine but surprising enough, a hit with the older girls around my age! I have white on red "MU-66-GT" @ $130/yr on GT SALLY

In QLD it's $440 one off  for 2-3 numbers + 3 letters  or 3 letters + 2-3 numbers in a whole range of colours. I bought a set for my 12y.o. son in my name but transferred them to him for free if it is a gift. The rego office said personalised plates are popular for christening gifts. I own 4 sets of personised plates. 2 sets sit in my office ready for the nexted project.

I can't believe the RTA are now charging a yearly fee even if its a standard plate.
Rotten mongrels :_

I have plates in mind for mine... but not sure I want to pay $150/yr for a few years until my car is finished.

My favourite plates of all time were PIGB8
