400 Clevo What Auto will fit?
« on: September 26, 2009, 09:22:03 pm »
Hi Guy's, a friend of mine just delivered an engine for me to assemble. Was supposed to be a stroked 351;w but it's a 400 Cleveland that takes a big block bellhousing but which one?  Will a 429/460 bellhousing fit or is the 400  unique?

Was going to build a suitable C10, does anyone have a C4 bellhousing that will fit?  Probably easier to find a C6 though. Anyone have a C6 that will fit?

400m (it isn't a clevo) run standard big block Ford bellhousing. There are Top Loader bellhousings, and Auto's in FMX, or C6. There is some "rare as" C4/C10 bellhousings, but they are hard to find in the US, and will need to be shipped out. I ran C6's behind both of mine.

There were some rare as 400m blocks with dual bolt patterns, small block and big block.

Is your mate going to fit this to a car that had a clevo in it?

Mounts are different, and his extractors may not clear the floor anymore. It will be quite tight in the engine bay of a Falcon too.

IIRC main bearings are 351W, inlet manifold gasket and manifold are unique, the rest of the gaskets are clevo. Pushrods are unique, as are conrods, pistons.

If your interested, I am clearing a bit of 400m stuff, single and dual plane manifolds, inlet manifold gasket and steel tray, plus a machined block, with resized conrods, fitted with new pistons & ARP bolts.

Hey MustangNut;  if you are looking for a suitable bellhousing, check with Mark, as he has quite a few.

Ford 400-429-460 should interchange:

Also have a look here for a C4/400M bellhousing part number:

Thanks for all the advice Guy's. We've worked out that the 400 is a later big block and any bell housing from a 429-460 will fit. A C4 bellhousing is available but rare as. So I guess it's a C6.  Anyone have a suitable C6 gathering Dust?

I sold mine, a while ago.
There are 3 different big block C6's, 1 is for 4x4 married transfer cases, 1 has a long extension housing, and 1 has a short one.
IIRC, the long ext housing is the truck box, the short is the passenger car box, and more suitable.

Whats it going into?
