Just thought I'd share some finds

Drove past this yesterday dropping off Lee's parts for his 69 "Q" code

Its not a mustang but its a very scarce car.

Its a 2 door dato 1600 with a 12A N/A rotor engine with a 5 speed. Never been a big fan of rotars but from memory there worth about $20-$30k back home (dont hold me to that)

Guys asking $5500 and Im pretty sure Im gonna buy it as they hard to find (even in Japan) considering its allready converted with a rotar and 5 speed...the kids back home would love it.

If anyones interested in the chook cooker, drop me an email

Yeah 2 door datto 510 (1600) would be snapped up pretty quick here due to its rarity, even taking into account the 12a.

Nice Shelbys Matt.

In a few years I want to bring over an investment grade car - not  ready yet. Out of curiousity, do you pay luxury car tax on those cars or just the usual duty and GST ?

Cheers,
Frank.

I thought it was just GST for such an old car?  So (purchase price converted from US$ to A$, + all freight charges) x 1.1 for GST = full cost?

Bee,

I thought you pay duty + GST from what I understand.  duty is 15% I thought, but I could be wrong. Then for cars over the luxury threshold (about $57k I think) you have to add the luxury tax as well.

Not sure how all the numbers add up. someone like Matt should have all the details , or there will be a govt website.

Cheers,
Frank.

I asked a regular importer and reseller of these cars this question about 2 weeks ago and the answer I got (maybe restricted to these sorts of cars only) is what I wrote above (I hope!!!).  I could be wrong and have been many times.;}

Bee,

Sorry, your guy is wrong - you pay duty, GST + LCT where applicable.

All info is here :

http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=4371#duty

Cheers,
Frank.

So on something like those Shelbys the tax is (assuming US $75 K) which is in about
A$ 90k

duty = 10 % = $ 9000

assuming $4k transport costs, then you pay GST on the total : $90k + 9000 + 4000 = $99k , so GST is $9900.

sub total is then $108900 - call it $109K

LCT is the taxed on the diff between $100k and the threshhold - $57k, so $52K.
LCT rate is Diff x 10/11 x 0.33 = 43000 x 10/11 x 0.33 = $15600

therefore your total taxes is $ 9000 + 9900 + 15600 = $ 34500 !!
I hope my maths is OK - I did some rounding here and there.

A lot !!!

Cheers,
Frank.

Hi Guys,

From the information I have from the  "Guide to the importation of privately owned motor vehicles or motorcycles" you do not pay customs duty on a vehicle over 30 years old. Google the words in " " and you can download the PDF.

The salt in the wound is that I believe you still have cough up state stamp duty for registration.

cheers

Hi Guys,

While I am a Customs Officer, this isn't my area of expertise, but I did do some research and asked some questions today.

Short Answer? LCT applies to all cars bar a number of exemptions, age not listed as one of them.

Check out page 6/10.
http://intranet.customs.gov.au/goods/importing/reporting-items/documents/import-guide-privately-owned-motor-vehicles.pdf

PASSENGER VEHICLES OF AN AGE OF 30 YEARS OR MORE (vehicles thirty years or more old are subject to GST only):
Customs duty = None
GST = 10%
LCT: May apply. ;]

Call Customs (not me!) for the cost of a Local call 1300 363 263

Hope this clears it up.

Whatever, it's still a rip off! LCT on a 30 year old car, what a joke.

Jeremy, Having problems emailing to hotmail accounts so I thought I would post them for you.

1970 Mach 1 "H" code 351 2v, needs plenty of work by the pics. Needs a new carby as its running very rich

I think the guy would let the car go cheaper from the look of it. If you could get it for $4-5k it would be a good little project...but thats all it is..a project car.

If your interested, gives a call

Cheers

Matt
