Wiring harness upgrade
« on: September 03, 2006, 09:31:00 am »
Hi all, Due to some poor conversion work in the past, I've been advised that I need new harnesses for my 66 coupe. At a minimum, I will need a dash harness, but will probably look for a full kit.
I can see on the net that I can buy a full kit for approx US$700 plus freight, and locally I was quoted AUD$1650.
Any advice on where they might come cheaper? Also, will I have any problems with having the left hand kit being installed into a right hand converted car?
Thanks

Hi Tony, you may be better off making your own harness or sourcing someone local to do it for you. If you buy a new LHD harness you will have to butcher/modify it to fit RHD, this is probably what has happened to your original harness.
There are wiring harness's (Painless brand I think), available on EBAY and other places but these run at around $900 -$1000 each.
Another possible option is to buy an Aussie ford harness from your local wrecker, it will still need some mods though.

Hi, I noticed a painless wiring kit on ebay through American Auto Parts. They wanted $995. Still not cheap, but better than $1650...

Andy,
automotive wirin isn't really that hard.

Surely, given the right tradesman, your harness is quite repairable.

and that from a panel beater!!!   (ya don't wanna know how many hours i've spent on these things!!!)

A painless kit, is a generic item, That still needs MANY hours of work.

Most original harnesses can be repaired and fitted mirror reverse with minimal problems. The trick is knowing what needs replacing and what can be re-used.
My '66 was redone last year and all the electrical components (dash guages, lights, etc.) restored to new condition without any problems. Cost was $1,100.00

Are you in Melbourne, because I can recommend a genius auto elec. who specialises in Mustangs.
