Your local Mustang parts supplier has one...

HI,

I have one main grounding lead from the battery directly to the engine but also one thinner wire that appears to be for earthing the body. Both wires are connected together at the battery.
Is there anywhere in particular the thinner wire should connect?

Cheers

Sean

I have seen this done a couple of times, something to do with not getting a proper ground through rubber engine mounts apparently.

Yes it is normal to ground the engine and chassis separately.
Both need grounds.
The engine needs a much thicker one due to the starter current.

The chassis ground can go anywhere on the chassis to the battery, or from engine to chassis. Either way will work.

Thanks Hybrid,

I thought that may be the case after researching other forums.

All the original cars I have been involved with that thin earth wire has gone from the rear of block to the firewall on the RHS.

Thanks Stormin,

I understand there should be a cable from back of the block to the firewall - which I thought was a reasonable size cable.
I understood there was a seperate, thinner (maybe 4-6mm) cable directly from the battery terminal to the chassis as well.
these are both in addition to the main battery earth to engine.
Does that sound correct?

It's a braided cable from the rear of the motor to the rear of the engine bay, earths the chassis/body shell via the engine.
There is also an earth wire in the alternator harness if memory serves me correctly?

At the end of the day, you just need a ground from your battery to both the engine and chassis.
How they are connected does not matter.
Either you take the main ground wire to the engine and then connect a ground wire from engine to chassis, or you ground both engine and chassis to the battery.

If you want concourse then get the right engine/chassis cable and do it the same. Otherwise it doesn't matter as long as both are grounded.
