Windscreens anyone???
« on: January 21, 2009, 12:06:43 am »
Goodday,

Just been quoted today for new front and back windscreens for my 67 fastback.......

Front: 500sometin
Back: aroung 600

plus rubbers around 80sometin

Does that sound right? so lookng around 1200 to replace front and rear glass with rubber.

It sounds a lot to me but maybe its the going price.
Can anyone recommend anyone from around Sydney?:p

Sheesh that sounds a bit steep, particularly for the front.

Have you tried Ralph Moore Autoglass at Mascot on 9667 1933, who supply glass for a lot of classics. Their email is <autoglass@bigpond.com>

I bought my Rubbers from the Auto Rubber place, and a mate replaced the front screen for $300. Rears may be more, Rare Spares have the glass.

Shop around, maybe get someone in the trade you know to make the call.

The rear sounds pretty good as they are US$405 from NPD then you have to get it here. The front sounds steep though so maybe they were just averaging it out.

I priced glass from a mate at Rare spares (the boss had some molded up for his own car) at about $250 per piece.

The rubbers were $40 each.

Word of advice.....If you don't have the head-lining in there yet, its better to get that done BEFORE you put the windscreens in to it.

:(:i.......will do that first.

At the moment the screens are there, the rear is fine, but the front has a stone chip in it, so I know I'll have to replace for rego sake and ofcourse safety.

Big crack in the bottom left of the windscreen too!
Rear i would leave and spend those $$ on something else more needy for now. Its servicable with a few marks on it.

Though as 67er said its better to do it with the headliner removed

I think what 67er meant is that it is easier to put a new headliner in without the screens in place.

I know from experience as I just tried to do it and it is difficult to stretch the headliner front to back without being able to clamp it around the edges where the screens go. With the screens in place you cant get a clamp or pinchweld in there to hold it.

Cheers,
Frank.

That's right, thats why I had mine removed and refitted, as I had a new headlining fitted.

Unfortunataly, my contacts are in Vic....

Does that apply just to a F/B or to a coupe too.  The one I am looking at could possibly need a headliner replaced.

Thanks in advance.

stanglover,

Who are you insured with? I thought you get one free windscreen replacement per year with Shannons.

To fit a headlining, you need to pop the front and rear screens.

I thought to claim a screen, it had to have a crack thru both pieces of glass??

Before you lock in Shannons, suggest you give Lumley Special Vehicles (formerly Vigil) a chance to quote, as they supported the big annual Victorian Mustang round-up back in October. Their number is 13 35 78, and they told us special deals applied to Mustangs, but I don't know how long that lasted.

Most who have tried them have saved money, and reports on claims are all good.

Might be able to claw back a bit towards those windscreens.

Incidently, have you thought of getting the rear glass polished. It's a lot cheaper than new, and generally comes up really well. I think Windscreens O'Brien do it, but not sure in NSW.

Hey Stef.

Who fitted your headliner ? I tried to do it, but it is too hard - especially with the screens in place. I guess they may have to pop them out.

Cheers,
Frank.
