i am in vic and was wondering would it pass roadworthy with steering play? you can move the wheel about 1/4 turn without it moving the wheels i also have a smaller aftermarket steering wheel fitted!

Hi mswyld
I dont know for Vic, but in NSW it would be a roadworthy defect.
It sounds like you have excessive movement in your steering joints.
lie under the car [chock rear wheels] and get someone to move the steering wheel freeplay only, [the 1/4 turn ] while you have a good look at the pitman arm, idler arm, tie rod ends etc to see which one has the excessive movement.:o:o:(
Also check the flexable coupling where the lower end of the steering column meets the steering box,
Hope this helps.

Disregard the bit about a flexible coupling in "yianni351"'s post, 65 - 66 dont have it, (unless converted with later model system). But definitly check out the other parts as suggested.

You may want to check if there is ant adjustment left in your steering box. Loosen the locknut and slowly screw in the adjuster screw.

On my 67 coupe I also had steering play probs but  the adjustment on the steering box is easy to do (carefully) and seemed to eradicate the play quite well.Just make sure the problem is not linkages ,arms rams etc first.   Johnno.
