They were probably admiring your cars
« on: September 06, 2008, 07:36:59 am »

Hi fellow croweaters, We are close to having our 68 coupe ready to make the trip to Regency Park for rego.

http://photobucket.com/rocket67

I am hearing conflicting stories of what changes are required. Apart from the obvious requirement of roadworthiness, what other changes are required?

I know that we need to change the headlights. Also we have amber indicator lenses with lcd lights on order.
Are any changes required to the seatbelts?

This car is a LHD 6 cylinder. It is the first of half a dozen cars that we are restoring, so within a few months we will make quite a few trips down there.

Maybe i will throw a carton of " Crownies " in the boot each time! ( joke ).

Rocket.

Rocket, not sure about SA but in Vic you only need to change the headlights. Lenses, seatbelts aren't an issue. Best thing to do is track down a roadworthy mechanic that's into classics like I did. He knew all the rules & set me straight before I started replacing things unnecessarily.

Evan.

Hi Evan, thanks for your reply.

In South Australia - roadworthy certificates are not required.

Vehicles are only inspected when they are being transferred from interstate / overseas, or after being defected for being unroadworthy by the police, or after having repairs done if bought at a wreck auction.

At the Regency Park inspection station - the inspectors have a reputation as being very thorough when checking over a vehicle. Therefore we all know to make very sure that everyhing must be in excellent working order, or it is a waste of time ( and money ) going there.

Rocket,

Contact Regency. They can send you / fax you a detailed sheet on the requirements for LHD rego in SA.

Along with that will be all the usual checks starting with documentation then onto all the usual mechanical checks ie front end pretty harsh on ball joints brakes and steering for obivious reasons then things like oil leaks and the like. If your car is modified in any way that ups the stakes !!!

This is what I have learned thus far.

Good luck
Matt

Will contact Regency and get them.

n the 68 we have already fitted disc brakes and master cylinder, booster. Stops very well now.

The car has power steering and has a lot of play in it. So we are going to renew all steering components and most of the suspension as well.

How is your new car.?

Hi 2+266, We have decided to do something about it!

Rack and Pinion Steering!!!

Have done a search on the net and found a business called Right Conversions - 79A Rundle Rd Salisbury South. Appears that they are the SA Agents for RRS.

Does anybody have any knowledge/ experience with this business? Just want to ensure that our baby is in good hands!

Rocket. Right Conversions converted my car to rhd about 15 years ago.  Did a good job. Eric is the name of the guy who runs it. I call in from time to time but have not been there for a while.  Its worth a look just to see what he is working on.

Hi shopony, Thanks for the info.

My son rang the chap this arvo and had a friendly conversation with him.

Must be a good and popular business as he is quite busy.

The suggestion was to leave it factory standard in order to get it through Regency. Will take the advice on board, and possibly look at the RRS unit at a later date.

For the benefit of anybody considering this - the quoted supply only price was $2,680.

But do not do it to your car until after you get it registered!

Hi Matt, how about posting some photos of your Mustang?

Only a bit over 3 weeks to wait now.

What did you need to have done to get it ready for Regency?

Rocket,

Pics posted in members rides.

I took the car to Rob at St Marys. He was fantastic.........."Nothing stressfull"  To use Robs fav saying to get it ready.

- New shocks , new ball joints , new front wheel bearings , new exhaust , new gaskets to the rockers and trans new washer bag and motor.....then just fiddly stuff getting everything electrical working. Oh and new headlights to AS.

- Then a good clean up !!!! Putting a new battery tray this weekend old one is stuffed.

Cheers
Matt

Bloody Hell !!!! This Friday is the day for the inspection. The last five weeks waiting has gone pretty damn quick.  Hope it gets through !!!!

I shouldn`t post this.....BUT. Last weekend I finished fitting the battery tray. Thought.......What the heck ? I should take it for a blocky as I had driven it once on the road under permit. After all I live in Clarence Park (Goodwood) and I have NEVER seen a police car.

Well jump in get to the end of my street turn right and run head first into a patrol car !!!!! NO PLATES. I S$%T myself as the min penalty is loss of licence for three months and possible car impound !!!!!

The only thing I think saved me was I still had the old permit on the window........I swear never again !!!!!!! If you are a member of the police force and intend using this as evidence to charge me......I am not of sound mind and made it all up !!!!!:(

Had a similar experience on Edwards St at Melrose Park......never again.

My cousins lhd 67 Firebird convertible went thru with flying colours a couple of weeks back-guy inspecting was very reasonable.Car is not 100 % factory spec(who's is?) -some minor performance mods.-but it is very clean in appearance,no leaks, faults and as pretty close to brand new mechanically.......not so scarey?

Yield not to temptation!!!!!!!

Hope you both enjoyed your drive!!!

I would not do that!......... YES - I would!! :p:p:p

How did you get on Matt?

70 Mach1 - You inspire confidence. I read a story on a forum where a member tells of his bad experience at Regency. But judging by the ranting this bloke made - i believe that his bad attitude was what caused his problem. These young kids need to learn to treat people with a bit of respect.

Sorry guys.

It was gold !!!!! The guy that did the inspection was fantastic. Its so ambarrassing. He asked me to turn the parkers on I actually forgot what they were ?????? I told him I was so bloody nervous because I had been waiting so long for this moment !!!!

He checked the lights all good. Checked the belts all good. Put it on the hoist.......commented on how original it looked checked the ball joints brake lines etc commented that it was obvious it had been prepared by someone that knew what they were doing ( Thats Rob )......all good. Brake test all good.

THAT WAS IT !!!! Serious I couldnt believe it. It was done and passed under 25mins !!!! The inspectin and roadworthy was a breeze. The guy was not a tosser at all. They really like stuff as original as possible. I was a bit worried because I had fitted new extractors he didn`t say a word.

Now actually going into pay for rego and get the plates.........that took two hours !!!!

I have never been so happy to actually get the plates and put them on the car.

Now its just cruise city !!!! Been up through the hills with the girls doing Loberthol and Birdwood. Anthea just loves how the cars come straight at her as it is LHD.....makes me laugh every time.

Cant wait for the first run

Cheers
Matt

Perfect timing now the price of a tank of petrol has become half reasonable.

The Adelaide Hills and surrounds are as good a set of inland roads for Mustang enjoyment as anywhere in Oz.

So put some fuel though it, and have a heap of fun after all that stress.

Just don't cause any speed cameras to arc up and spoil your day.

had a visit last week-flunked the test..one mechanical fault .one non compliance with safety regs fault  ie seat belts-my bad-wrong belts..and two non original items......oh well try again..........if you keep throwing money at these things-eventually they go trough
