Registration
« on: October 24, 2023, 01:55:19 am »
Hi guys, just wondering can anybody help me. I purchased a '67 mustang in Ireland, that was registered in south Australia. Originally brought from Calfornia to Australia. Just wondering if anyone knows is it a ford conversion from left to right hand drive. Registration number is VSV 067.
Thanks in advance.

It wouldn't be a Ford factory conversion, most likely converted by an individual or a company here. Special licensing was not a requirement for converting these to RHD.

Just for clarity - the car has made it from the US to Australia to Ireland? Or are you in Tullamore in NSW?

I believe ford Australia converted and sold some 66’s all light blue as a promotion to sell XR GTs.
Are you intending to return it to Australia?
Do you have an engineer certification for the conversion?

Do you have a copy of the "import approval" from when it came into AUS from the US - the date on that will help in terms of working our when the conversion was done

As someone else mentioned, there was a bunch of 65/66's converted and sold by Ford AU (around 209) but this is not yours. In the early days (60's) there was a requirement to convert cars to RHD for registration, can't remember when it changed to allow us to keep them LHD but I know of a number of 65/66/67s that went through that process (ones that came into AU back then)

Also, converting to RHD (just for convenience) was a thing even after the legal requirement dropped. Most cities had specialists that did it (some good, some not so good) but it has become less popular these days, I am guessing due to a combination of cost, people that can do it and maybe people are generally accepting of LHD (and for some cars, value is better retained as original)

I guess your best bet will be someone from the MOCA SA side seeing this post and recognising the car/history - maybe try contacting them directly? (https://sa.mustang.org.au/), search of the forum might also help

cheers

greg

Being that the number plate starts with V tells me it was registered around 30 years ago and at that time you couldn’t register a LHD.
By interest does the wipers sweep left to right and antenna on passages side with orange indicators on the rear?
If so maybe legit.
Ring SA department of motor vehicle they retain data and you maybe lucky if the conversation was legal.

Hi there, well I bought it in 1997 in Australia, I don't think it was there too many years it was there prior to that but I would think a couple of years, that pretty much tie in with it being imported there 30 years ago. All the documents were taken by the registration  office here at the time I registered it here.

I remember the guy saying it was a San Francisco car that belonged to a woman.

Hope that helps a bit

Sorry it was 1996 I bought it in Oz

My first car here was 1994 and I went there just before it was 2 years old so I was there in 1996 to 1997 but I bought the car within the first couple of months, so around April I would think.

Sorry guys for the late reply. This is the information i have.

The antenna is on the left hand wing. Indicators seem to be white with yellow bulbs. Wipers moving from right to left, down on left hand side.

By all you said, I have no doubt its a legal conversion and would have had all the appropriate engineer to get register in that period in SA.
Mine was converted at around the same time in SA by a group called "Right Conversion" in Salisbury SA.
Adelaide isn't a big place and there wouldn't have been a lot of companies doing it back then so my guess.
I spoke the owner Eric a couple years ago and then still in business.
Strangely he remembered my car and happy to chat.
I bet if you have no luck with SA Dep of Reg  Eric would have the documents you require.
Also if you talk to SA Dep Reg at Regency Park I would say you are registering it in Australia as they may not help otherwise.
note when I checked on a Dep of Reg Ap your plate still exists so if you wanted to register it in SA you could  :) with no inspection.

Hi there.           And thanks so much for the information. We tried calling the reg office but just got the runaround. I think our best bet is what you suggested. And try to contact that garage.if you had a email address for them i would be very grateful to you. We might be able to get some more information. Yours Sincerly aidan.

Sorry, googled and got little more than a phone number and address.
Guess the business predates the internet.
And as for motor rego very hit and miss.
Best bet would be regency park office as that’s where they inspected
