Liddell Power Station
« on: April 12, 2023, 01:34:22 pm »
Hey All,
It’s a sad day today as Liddell Power Station closes after 50 years of service.
It is extremely sad for those working there and for past employees.
I hope you all can get together and reflect the good old days with buddies past and present.
I did my apprenticeship at Wallerwang Power Station in the 70’s and it was gut wrenching watching it blown up.

On AEMO New South Wales production is 1000Mw under Consumption.
Eastern Australia has a grid that transfers from one state to another on spot price.

Effects of Liddell closing will not be immediately apparent but it surely will happen in increasing electricity prices and rolling blackouts!

Hoping for the best, expecting the worse!

I stole that off this forum.

Cheers Phil.

Hi all,
I was wrong about Liddell shutting down so early, it has only totally shut down in the last week or so.
And it shows very clearly on the AEMO web site.
I check this web site regularly each day and it is obvious NSW has been in deficit around 1000Mw regularly in the last few days,
Relying on power from other states.
They have a plan to make up this loss but not soon enough.
Relying on power from long distances brings Voltage drop, not very smart! 4% loss per 1000km of line, with cable droop and indirect line routes that’s probably at least >1200km of cable for 1000km of distance.

So the blackout’s will impact NSW sooner than predicted, it is going to get ugly if AEMO blackout a another State to feed NSW.

Continual threat of blackouts will have an huge impact on industry that pays wages continuing, starting up, expanding Etc. in NSW.

One industry very concerned would all foundry production were high volume and continual power supply is essential.

In underground mining if you lose power the ventilation ceases, all employees need to be withdrawn to the surface until power is restored, depending on the time of the lose of ventilation there is a period taken for Mining Officials need to inspect underground places for gas and damp before power can be restored and employees return underground.

Cheers Phil.

Hey all,

Finally Liddell did close today!
But wind farms will save the day, even though they will kill wildlife, and will only produce 224Mw/hr on a windy day.
Liddell produced about 1200Mg/hr.

It's called progress Phil.  I'm sure the same sense of "what the fork are they doing" was experienced by our parents.

Hey Tony,
Thanks for your reply, but I’m not against progress.
If you read my previous post “Pollution in China” myself and others have had extensive fruitful chat about our Power needs.
We’ve spoken about the large amounts of Power required and alternative Wind, Solar, Nuclear, Tidal and Hyrdo to makeup the shortfall we are experiencing.
And more importantly the lack of Government that got us to this situation.
Cheers Phil.

All good mate.  I meant that the hype around going green is creating unrealistic expectations in how quickly it can be done.  We agree a date of 2050 then act like its 2049....

Hey all,

An interesting fact, Number of coal fired power stations in the world.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/859266/number-of-coal-power-plants-by-country/

As at July 2022,
Taiwan has 20 Power Stations at 36,157km/2
Australia has 19 Power Stations at 7.7 million km/2
And population of both are about the same!

Another interesting fact (IMO) is the further you go down the list the less progressive in GDP these countries are?

Hey All,
I’m sure you are all sick of my harping on about Energy.

But AMEO must have contacted Brown coal and Gas Generators to increase to meet demand.

Current fuel mix.

Battery - 0%
Biomass - 0%
Black Coal - 46%
Brown Coal - 18%
Gas - 18%
Hydro - 14%
Liquid Fuel - 0%
Solar Farms - 0%
Wind Generators - 3%

Liddell has made a huge impact and look forward to news getting Liddell back on line?

Cheers Phil.

Hi all,
I must be fare and report Wind Energy is currently 32%, that is great, but, you can’t depend on 32% at one time and 4% the next. That Wind Energy is mostly from SA and Victoria.
You can predict demand reasonably well but generation is hit or miss.
Also since Liddell was taken off line New South Wales demand has always been far more than generation!
Cheers Phil.
