Retractable lap/sash seat belts for 65 coupe ADR approved

Hi all you guys/girls out there in Mustang world. New member so please bear with me. Doing a full resto/ RHD conversion to 65 coupe. Could anyone out there advise me where I could purchase ADR approved retractable lap/sash seatbelts. Did see some Scott drake belts but not sure if they are ADR approved. Thankyou

Hey Blink,
I fitted lap sash belts in my 68 Mustang.
Not sure if 65 66 Mustangs are the same.
On the C pillar right above the quarter window there is factory holes, a slot about 1” x 3/4”, about 9/16” hole and a 1/4” hole, these are used to fit the top anchor plate for a lap sash belt.
You slip the anchor plate through the slot, anchor the plate with a bolt through the small hole and the seat belt top anchor screws into the large hole.
Just lightly push against your roof lining to locate these or pull the lining down a little to locate these.

If you attach the seat belt at the bottom of the window it is too low and you will find it uncomfortable.

I also used a dropper with my seat belt.

Pretty sure the early cars didn't have the upper mounting holes. Lower ones for two point lap belts only in the front should be there for a '66 but less likely in a '65. You can fit the upper mount with correct reinforcement plate into the roof rail but its a lot of work and the roof is actually a lot weaker than the door pillar structure behind the front seats where mine are mounted.

I have the upper mount for my three point retractables below the window and they're not uncomfortable at all and don't slip off the shoulder, either mine (180 cm tall) or my better half (155 cm).

Thanks heaps you guys, your advice is much appreciated. Aussie Phil the 65’s don’t have the roof mounting but have also been advised to go the lower mounting re strength factor. Wish I had discovered this forum earlier, would have made life a lot easier regarding previous probs I’ve had to deal with. Have a good one.

Wherever you get your belts, pay attention to the retractor angle issue as covered on the Seatsafe website I posted earlier. You don't want to get this wrong.

Steve, speak to Peter Cameron at Restraint Technology Bayswater re supply/positioning of belts in 65 coupe. He has experience in the belt testing area and advised me to go the roof mount due to possible spinal compression in accident if using the quarter window behind seat mount. Bought my belts from him and the guys painting my car did the required welding. He also explained about working out belt angles. Have been given an engineers name but haven’t contacted as yet. Will let you know if/when. Cheers.

I got my inertia reals from Retrobelt in the US. Mine is a 69 so the shoulder attachment was already there. For the front I found them too high so used 10" drop links from Hemi Performance (Aus). Retrobelt didn't make inertia real belts for the rear, but I found using front inertia reals and having them shortened worked well. The attach points and belts were approved by my engineer (NSW).

Hi there.
I worked with a very good engineer on my 65 Fastback. Paul Bottomley is his name (APS Engineering), but he is out in Epping unfortunately.
I only suggest him as he inspected, tested and approved the inertia-reel lap/sash seatbelts i installed for all 4 passengers in my 66 Fastback.
And doing this for rear passengers in early Fastbacks is tricky!

The positioning of the shoulder anchor point for a 65-66 coupe (roof mount v just below window) is always open to debate. I have just returned from Europe and noticed the Porsche convertibles have the seat belt coming out of the body below the height of the shoulder. Also rode in the back seat of a 2023 Mini Clubman where the seat belt also came out of the body (not the roof line) well below my shoulder. In both cases you might think spinal compression is a possibility, yet these are modern cars.

I’m probably going to get beaten up for this.
But I have Scott drake seat belts front and back.
My view is fitting Scott drake lap sash is better than none or just lap.
Remember pre 67 doesn’t need seat belts fitted
