Hi all, I want to share my experience getting a better Parking brake on my 1968 Mustang.
The car has a Ford 9" Differential with Ford Explorer Disc brakes and drum parking brakes and a Lokar centre pull hand brake lever.
Originally the Lokar only had a single cable running to two cables running directly to the drum parking brakes.
I replaced the parking brake shoes and noticed that the shoe return springs were very stiff, that stiff that without the rotors on the hand brake lever was very hard to pull.
So looking at the Ford Explorer had a parking brake foot pedal, applying much more force than you could get with a hand pull lever!
I started out fitting a pulley to get a 2:1 pull, that was not enough, pulled to a maximum the lever just went hard, and would't hold the car very well on an incline!
Next step I added another pulley, the brake cable went from the Lokar pivot around a pulley connected to the brake cables and back around the other pulley bolted to the Lokar assembly and then anchored to the other pulley front!
And it works brilliantly! Hope this helps anyone in the same situation!
I'll post photos later!
Cheers Phil.
