'67 Coupe running rough ... for nearly a year now
« on: September 20, 2020, 03:46:58 pm »
Hi there, I'm new to this forum and by no means an expert in mechanics.

I've had a '67 coupe I bought in California when I lived there in 2003 and shipped it back with me when I moved home.  It's in very original condition and I've had it maintained by my local neighbourhood mechanic since that time.

Since the start of the year, it has been running very rough - misfiring to the point of stalling and at times not able to run under any acceleration.

My mechanic has worked through the following:
- suspected bad fuel/corroded fuel tank: replaced fuel tank and fuel lines ... worked OK for a while, but then problems returned
- suspected carburetor secondary throttle not closing: refurbished the carburetor ... worked OK for a while, but then problems returned
- suspected electrical issue: almost complete rewiring of the car, replaced distributer cap/cables/spark plugs ... worked OK for a while, but now problems returned

Prior to running rough, and just in case it's related (but I'm assured it is not), the car was running hot.  Turns out the water pump was leaking plus the radiator core had gone.  Replaced with a new/refurbished water pump and radiator (core).

My mechanic is trustworthy, but doesn't specalise in classic cars.  Wondering if anyone has any suggestions or can recommend a mechanic experienced with Mustangs (or Falcons) in the Sydney inner city area.

Or, anyone interested in buying a nice clean Mustang in original condition?!

Appreciate any tips, pointers or advice.  Many thanks!

If I could give anyone advice on classic car ownership learn to turn a screwdriver yourself, you will find it expensive in the process of finding a good mechanic. We all go through the "why did I buy it " thoughts but stick in there and fixing a problem can be as rewarding as driving the car.
tell me more does it back fire through the carburetor or emit black smoke out the exhaust?, does it idle okay, start okay, does it warm and cold?
does anyone remember laughter
