Where to start
« on: April 10, 2020, 05:59:50 pm »
Hi there,

I have recently picked up a 66 coupe.

Currently it is a shell with a pile of parts, but i cannot lay my hands on bolts for any of the front body work including guards. It has sat around for a long time, so possible they could have been chucked out.

Is it worth getting the bolt kits or source locally from bolt supplier. Can anyone recommend some good books that detail complete car assembly?

Secondly, are the electric power steer conversions worth doing?

Thanks in advance

Borgeson with a KRC pump ( which can be tuned for flow and pressure) is a good option

Any of the Mustang parts suppliers, such as those on the right of this page, Custom Mustangs, Harrys in Sydney, National Mustangs etc. will be able to supply the correct hardware and post or courier them to you.

The original style bolts for the guards have captive serrated washers that cut up your nice new paint under the bonnet. There are stainless alternatives with a rubber or fibre washer or something if originality isn't crucial for you.

If you have a manual steer box in the car and add an electric power assist unit you still have 19:1 ratio, its just easier to turn it all that way. The Borgeson setup makes it 16:1 like an original power steering car and is a better idea in my view. If you go electric you'll need a bigger output alternator to keep up with it.

Get a Scott Drake catalog from Custom Mustangs.
There are lots of reproduced bolts for replacements.

If you need enough parts and if it will save you much money, I can sell you Scott Drake parts at least 15% less than the suggested USA retail price plus whatever it will cost to ship them.

My friend Tony Gerace, at Gerace Restorations in Adelaide should have what you need as well.

very helpful, as for the bolts, you will find them tucked away in a box once your build is finished..., :thud:

The stainless ones with the captive washers are quite reasonably priced.
