Is there enough space beside the seat to get your hand in there in an emergency?

I was thinking of doing the same thing but don't have seats in there to check.

ok, i'm confused. the e brake mounts under the dash so it has nothing to do with a floor console.

He wants to get rid of the one under the dash and install one beside the drivers seat (ie reach down beside seat with left hand instead of fumbling under the dash for it).

Correct.

doing an engine conversion atm so have built a new trans cross member and can no longer use the factory mount. Lokar have a kit that gets installed on the tunnel but am sure i have seen people install them beside the drivers seat. This will also be more practical for drag racing

Check they're legal in Vic, don't think we're allowed to have them here in SA as need to be able to stop if we lose all power to the car.

yeah good point, ill ask my engineer next time his out.

i do know though he did tell me that i will need to perform a foot brake test and park brake test whilst the vehicle is in motion and loaded, cant imagine being able to do that with an electric hand brake?

Years ago I fitted an 85 Mazda RX 7 hand brake to the tunnel between the console and the seat.
Welded in a little shelf to the tunnel side to mount it and exited the RX7 primary cable out the rear to a bracket under the rear seat floor. Had to get two secondary cables made up to mate with a shortened Disc Brake 8.8 diff.

Also used a Cortina tunnel handbrake centrally mounted through a 1975 Mustang II console on another conversion.

Biggest expense was getting cables made. Both fitments were engineer approved.

I know they call them Emergency Brakes in the US (even though that seems a bit laughable when you're talking about the under dash pull out arrangement in the early cars) but when did they stop being just Parking Brakes here? In most cars they are clearly marked on the handle and/or the dash indicator with a big P, not an E.

sure, just push the button and it applies the brakes and if it works well enough the rear tires will skid and the car will eventually stop, but obviously it is only on or off and can't easily be modulated unless there is a control like a dial to do that with. vehicles designed for handicapped people to drive have electric brake control so it is possible to do.

I have a tunnel mounted handbrake that works way better than the under dash one. I built my own console and handbrake is in the middle I think I used a mitzi  brake mech and had some cables made to suit.

If you're thinking of going with it mounted beside the seat it will have to be one from a HQ - HZ Holden which lowers to the floor when it's applied or else you might lose the family jewells getting out over it.  :thumb:
