Nassi!!

Finally I can help you!

Ive had 2 x diffs done (coupe and vert)...I know what you mean re: diff wind noise :)

1st step I put that sound proofing in the flooring (well Siv did) in the vert - made a massive difference.

Then I went to Belmont Diff and Clutch ( I can get the number for you. The dude is a South African bloke...his Dad works for him....

His work was awesome.. nad not too pricey!

Cheers

Thanks Jase, is all the noise gone or just more bearable?
Did you use a new centre? or just get the old one set up right?

I tried a local "expert" on the coupe a few years ago and all he managed was to make the noise come in at a different speed.

thanks mate

Nassi, both of mine are now as sweet as a bun....to be honest if there is a noise there after the rebuild...I cant hear it over the exhaust sound.

Im nearly certain they replaced everything.

Both of mine are 8 3/4.

The guy was awesome to deal with aswell and did the car/s in one day!  Drped it off int eh morning - picked it up at night :)

Ill get the number for you when i get home :)

Sivs going there soon i think to get his HR done + the Red Rocket soon :)

I had a quote from WA Diff Centre for $525.
Replace all bearings, lap the gears & re-assemble.
No comment, haven't done it as yet.
I did ring a few places and was surprised how many didn't know what an 8" ford diff was!

While we're on the subject, am I missing something here?
I often see the 8" being referred to as an 8 3/4"(ie people say they're the same thing)
If you were stating size to the nearest inch, then an 8 3/4" would be a 9"!
My understanding is that an 8 3/4" is a different design, fitted to later model cars.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Mike

I had mine rebuilt by F trucks in welshpool, did a great job and now she's quiet as a mouse at all speeds..funny thing was thought that the noise was coming from the wheel bearings not the diff centre. I had them re-build and adjust the tolerances on the centre while they were at it. doing the complete job of centre and bearings was about $800...If you go there, ask for Norm, He he has a red 67 GTA fastback (well his wife does anyway)
He reffered to it as an 8"not an 8 and 3/4"

In actual fact, there is a 8", as fitted to Mustangs, the 8.8" is a later mustang diff, 8 3/4 is the measurement of the Borg Warner diff, then there is a 9" as fitted to some mustangs/falcons and whgatever else, and a 9 1/4 fitted to some Lincolns and F trucks.

the 8" IS 8"!, not 8 3/4!!!

Thanks folks for the info.
Mike further to BLKPNY's info, in the removable carrier type diff there are actually 4 sizes, 7.75, 8, 8.75 and 9 inch. So going by the manual, mine will be 7.75, as no 2.80 ratio available in 8 or 8.75.

Now I'm really confussed ;w

Nassi,
your mates at Superoo could do your rebuild. I've just spoken to them about parts because I'm thinking of doing my own rebuild. They say they have a "guru" on 9" diffs but he only works 3 days a week & is fairly busy.

Cheers,
Mike.

Thanks Mike, that would be John.
To be honest I dont go there to get work done these days as he is just too busy and it could take forever, you will be continually chasing it up.

Nassi - WA diffs replaced the pumpkin i bought off of ebay and had shipped here - excellent work , fast service  but a little pricey for what they do.

below is the link to the ebay guy - its a little bit of stuffing around but cheaper and you end up with a spare pumpkin.

Oh anyone need a 9" center with 3;1 gears with new posi (not fitted) - Unit is used but in great condition , i just wanted a different ratio.

don't be put off by the ad he does regular 8" diffs as well , for around $500 i think

Nassi - I used BAX global via Marjac freight forwarders

I also bought the trac loc posi , its a helical gear posi (no clutches) and reallllllllllll smooth around corners.

Your web site has NO mustangs on it ?????????????????????
