1965 Mustang Removal of Seat Platforms Options
« on: April 09, 2018, 10:17:33 pm »
I want to upgrade the seats in my 65 Mustang. I found a pair of XR8 Ute front seats that have been reupholstered that match my original interior colours. Problem I have is that I need to remove the seat platform but I have been told that this is part of the structure of the car. What are my options for removing the platform b/c with it as it is, there is no way I will be able to get into the seat.

Cheers Darren

one option is to install weld in sub frame connectors then weld them to the floor then build 2 extensions on each side around 1 1/2" x 3" spaced the width of the platform measuring from front to rear and weld those to the sides of the sub frame connectors then weld a plate to the other end of the extensions and weld that to the floor by the rocker.

Hi Barnett. Do you suggest leaving 2 inches of the existing platforms each side & box them in? Cheers Darren

I have xr8 seats in my 65. You need to remove the standard rails and attach them to your factory rails with an adaptor plate.  Very easy to do.

Thanks Husky65.
Apologies for the late reply. Re-read what you wrote & had to chase this further. So I understand correctly, remove the XR8 rails & make an adaptor plate & bolt the 65 Mustang rails to this? No mods to the seat platform? How do you go getting your legs under the steering wheel? The 64-66 Mustang must be some of the lowest seats around. The foam is not very thick. Cheers Darren

My son in law was driving my 65 vert for a while and he is a big bloke. We installed a Grant 13in wheel and problem solved
I installed Pro Car seats in my 68 which have deep cushions and I just slide the seat right back to get in and out. But then I do have Duck's disease. I kept the Grant 15 inch Wheel

Took a couple pics to show you clearance. Heaps of room. I am using a 14" steering wheel though.
The side shot of the seat is from the carpet to the highest point which is the side bolster. The seat pad is much lower.

Once you take the rails off the falcon seats, you're left with 4 studs. The front studs can bolt directly to the original front holes on the seat rails(with the bracket sandwiched in between) as the width dimensions of the seat studs are a perfect match to fit into the seat pan. This will also move the seat back a couple of inches also(which is a good thing). The front to back dimensions are not a match, and that's why you need the bracket, which will interface the rear seat rail mount and the rear seat studs.

Once mounted you need to grind down the front studs so the rail can slide over them.

That is a far better idea than removing the platforms.

Thanks Husky65.
Simple once someone has done the grunt work. And yes, much easier than modifying the seat platforms. Cheers

Doesn't everyone do that in winter  :leaving:

Also Kerry did the work on the seat bracket, I just sat back and watched.

Um, well, you're not alone, I do too, as in wear sox with the same type of safety footwear, but only in winter...  :thumb:
