I don't know for sure but I think I read that they didn't have numbers? My number was stamped on a little oval pad on the front of the engine under where the air conditioner compressor is and they put the last 6 numbers of my chassis number.

yes, it could have a vin stamp.

where are the numbers located?

can you post a photo?

if that is a vin it is a 71.

the date code is cast in the block under the starter motor.

I found this the other night....The basic breakdown of the modern numbering convention (1959 and newer) is that the first digit is a letter and represents the decade in which the part was designed. A = 1940s, B = 1950s, C = 1960s, D = 1970s, E = 1980s, F = 1990s. The second digit will be a numeral, and will represent the year within that decade (i.e. C2 = 1962; E7 = 1987).

I found this site very useful...

1A162866

1 = 1971 manufacture
A = Atlanta assembly plant
62866 = last 6 digits of the VIN for the car it was originally fitted to (sequence number so won't contain any letters)
Cheers,
Brian

Hi Brian

With Atlanta its likely the engine was actually originally in a Torino or Ranchero at a guess?

I wouldn't know, but pretty sure no 1st gen Mustangs were assembled at Atlanta.
Cheers,
