'68 Brake Booster
« on: February 17, 2018, 05:00:05 pm »
Mine is leaking vacuum, tested the check valve and it's OK.  Need to work out where to go from here: either replace or try to repair/rebuild.

Questions are:

- What brand/model of booster is it? (I'm guessing Midland)

Overall dimensions are approx 8" diameter by 7" deep from firewall to master cylinder

- Are any of the DIY repair kits available on Ebay and/or from Mustang parts suppliers likely to fix the problem?

E.g.  https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/172145290292

- What's a ball park figure for getting the booster professionally rebuilt?

- What would I need to look for in a replacement booster, e.g. would a 9" like one of the below fit or do I need to stick with 8"?

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/182922095211

Thanks guys.  Any Melbourne based options and/or comments on replacement units?

Not looking to spend big bucks on reconditioning the original unit if I can get a replacement for around $100.
Cheers,
Brian

Thanks guys, I understand the general preference to keep things original, but before I make that decision it would be good to know if:

(a) what does it cost to get an original Midland booster rebuilt?

(b) the 9" boosters on Ebay for $100 that claim to fit '67-'68 Mustangs really do fit or is there a 'gotcha'?

(c) if the new 9" ones do work, are there any benefits to using a modern one?  (e.g. work better with low vacuum engines)

I'm not concerned about it being original, though that car looks like it is pretty original in the bay. My preference here is its not Chinese, so if you have it repaired it will last 25 years most likely, not 4.

The ebay booster looks like a copy of a fox mustang booster ... they are used a lot in 65-66 conversions in the states, way better than the 7" alternatives out there. Have one in the 65.
A 69 Bendix will interchange with the 67-68 Midland. Have one in the 67.
But ... I agree with Shaun ... original is better than something made outta chinesium. Repair yours.

I rebuilt my Midland booster with a full rebuild kit from Harmon classic brakes in the USA, cost $255 US including shipping. You can find them on ebay they are the only people with Midland parts, they also sell all the parts individually so if you only need a diaphragm it won't cost a fortune.

Holy crap!

Holy crap is right - as you no doubt are aware Barn, the same job costs around $200 in the good ol' US of A.  If international postage wasn't so damn expensive I might be tempted to do just do that...

Pretty sure Ray at Knights charged me about $200 for the dual diaphragm XB Falcon one in my car, similar deal so long as he has the diaphragm. If you get on to Andrew who selling Merts deceased estate stuff I reckon there world be some there.

West Coast Cougar have rebuilt kits for the midland boosters. I buy off these guys as there shipping costs to Aus a pretty good and Im in Perth. As long as the plastic part that sits inside the rubber boot that the pedal rod goes through   is not cracked your good to go .

Yep and they also sell reconditioned boosters but they need yours in exchange and two way post to/from the USA is a killer.

Dunno how I'd go trying to recondition one myself...   :smash:
