5.0 litre injected problem
« on: January 23, 2018, 11:37:41 am »
This ones for the engine guru's .  A friend has a early f100 with a later model fuel injected 5.0 ltr in it. His problem is he starts the car and its drives and runs great , BUT when he turns it off hot after a drive and tries to start it again its a no go. He has had multiple sparky"s and mechanics check it out but cant seem to put there finger on it. He said its all motorcraft parts in the dizzy and ecu. This poor blokes in his 60"s and its really getting him down. Sydney based . Cheers gents.

So runs ok till you turn it off, then it wont restart? My guess is its flooding perhaps when hot or it has a heat soak issue into something. is it fuely while running hot? ie if the temp sensor thinks its cold it will over fuel and flood it.

The TFI module on the distributor had problems with heat soak. Symptoms were shutting of when hot and not starting when hot. Once cooled down they would work again. After a class action against them, Ford USA moved the TFI off the dizzy and onto the engine bay panel. At the same time Ford AUS went to coil packs, so you won't see any falcons with the relocated TFI.  I would firstly get a new TFI module from rockauto, a genuine Motorcraft one. Another option is the TFI relocation kits you can get like the one from McCully racing. Of course, it may not be this, but worth a shot. Google TFI Mustang problems and you'll read tons about it.

I had a 95 HO motor that would hunt and stall on a hot start.  Turned out the ECU was configured to run hella lean on a hot start until it went in to closed loop.  I found the relevant table and managed to richen it up to 15:1 which fixed the problem.

Is that the sort of thing he is getting or is it just not catching at all?

I had a 1995 Mustang 5.0 Gt that would do exactly the same thing. If it has the remote mounted TFI Module, I would suggest replacing the pick up in the distributor as that's what I did in mine and it fixed it and never missed a beat after that. I think that they're only about $80-$90 if that.

But be careful as there are a couple of different types, and the distributor will need to be removed from the car to replace it

Yup good call  i had a miss that was fixed by replacing the pickup. Rockauto sell genuine motorcraft ones for pretty cheap. Easy to replace with a press or a small jaw pulley puller as i have done before.

It would help to know what the engine fitted came out of.
A injected F series 5 litre has a different injection system to a car application 5 litre injected engine.
Speed density vs mass air, there are some common elements but they have some different sensors.
