Rear drums getting hot

Hey
I need help with my rear drum brakes on my 67 gt fastback.
Ever since I restored the underside of the car I can’t get the rear brakes right.
So when I drive it feels like the brakes are dragging cos once I take my foot of the brake pedal at the lights the car don’t roll forward until accelerator is pressed.
You can smell brakes and can’t even touch the rear rims how hot.
I’ve got new cylinders new shoes, new springs, new drums, bled the system 1000 times, even disconnected the rear proportioning valve.

Are the shoes facing the wrong way perhaps?

I don’t believe so. I think larger shoe goes to rear of car.

Over adjusted and the self adjusters might be adjusting when you put your foot on the brake . Back them off so you can just turn the wheel then pump the brakes a few times then see if you can still turn the wheel /wheels . If the shoes are on wrong , the brakes will lock up under heavy braking most of the time .  You can disconnect the  self adjusters .

The hand brake adjusters were wound in all the way.
Problem still there.

Not over sized shoes are they ? .  Does the brake drum go on easy ? . Are the front brakes free turning the same time the rears are coming on and getting hot . Did you do anything with the master cyl or booster ? .

If above checks don't work check fluid is flowing freely in both directions threw flex hose from body to diff housing. I had a car where hose had collapsed internally and fluid could not return to master cylinder causing brakes to drag and overheat. Remove a drum and check springs are pulling shoes back in after a gentle application of brake pedal ( don't push to far and pop wheel cylinder seal).

I didn’t touch the master cylinder although it did sit idle for 2 years during the resto.
The new shoes are the same size as the ones I replaced.
I did try press brakes while drums were off and yes the shoes do return.
The drums slide on and off fairly easy

If your in the Sth East I would suggest dropping in to see Robbie at Tucketts Tyrepower in Hastings.  He'll be able to have look at them for you as he's been working on and racing Mustangs for 20+ year's.  I have taken both of my cars over the year's and he looks after fellow Mustanger's

Self adjusters installed backwards maybe? If this is the case though, the drums will get tighter every time you hit the brakes.
