65 66 Centering from wheel
« on: October 31, 2017, 10:21:26 am »
Is there any forward/backward adjustment for the front wheels? i need to centre the wheel as its very close to my guards when turning with my new wheel setup. plenty of room to be pushed back. is it a matter or shimming?
for anyone thats done the Shelby drop, did this help centre the wheel as i noticed the new holes are down 1" and slightly back.

Convert the struts to adjustable by extending the thread to 150mm long and have nuts front & back.

I've also got this kit installed for more adjustment: http://opentrackerracing.com/product/lower-arm-camber-kit-1965-1966/

This is a good idea, but only if you want to achieve a bit more caster than what you may normally only achieve by shimming. Pulling the wheel back to far may not be a good idea as it will affect your caster setting and the car will pull to one side more than the other. Particularly on the left side which is where you want more positive caster. It will also affect your return ability of the steering wheel

I suggest get it to a real good wheel alignment specialist and get them to check the settings prior to changing anything

Buddy your mustang looks great  :thumb: . Looks like you went over board on the front wheel / tyre size ..  What side rim and tyre are they ? .  If it's hitting the front lifting the car up at the front will help or some people cut the front guard a little if a wheel alignment  won't do the job . You will be doing well over 100 mph at the track so you want the alignment correct .

some people cut the front guard a little

Or if it's only just catching, then rolling the lip may be enough without changing suspension settings.

Thanks Al. Got it booked in next week, see how that goes.

Cheers Glen. Front wheels are 17x4.5 and tyre is 175/55/17. The tyre is a little too wide however no Mickey Thompson radials (26x6r17) available in Aus until early next year.

i think i can get away with the right side, the left side is a little closer which is the concern.

im only cautious as i damaged the guards as a result of this, so now they are all repaired. Have folded the lip all the way down and raised the front by 20mm and also adjusted compression/damper, still a little to close for comfort.

What you do is modify the wheel arch, trim the arch and roll it around wire but your car is painted. Other wise you can sometimes get it by upgrading the lower inner pivots to 67 on eccentric camber pins, which gives to more camber adjustment  and I also cut more thread on the trailing arms so this gives caster adjustment like the later cars as well. With a combination of this and shims you can sometimes get the wheel back and still have enough adjustment for both camber and caster. They need more caster anyway, if it has PS I'd give 5 degrees with shims on the front bolt this will pull the wheel back some, if its got PS don't be afraid to give it caster. This will intern effect the camber which is why is good to have the eccentric lower pivot. I actually put longer bolts in the top arms of 67+ cars so they can be shimmed like the early cars also.  This gives 2 ways to adjust both camber and caster, you can generally  get them sorted then

Hmm that's 24.6 inches and that's not a problem . The front maybe still a little low and the offset on the rims might be a problem .  Get the wheel alignment done and see what happens .  Does it have 90/10 front shocks ? . They can help keep the front high even under braking

What day is the car booked in?

I can have my adjustable strut rod over there on Tues arvo if you want to have it available for the guy to try (if required).
