number plates

Hi all

I have just picked up my personalised plates (FB66GT) for the newly acquired 66 fastback and have found the plates to be too wide for the front.  The plates are a couple of inches too wide for recessed area.  What is the solution?  Are those plastic/glass number plate protectors helpfull, or do i buy extra long screws and use an inch of washers to keep the plates flush with the front panelling?

Cheers

I got a length of aluminium hollow square section (local hardware shop) and cut off what was needed, bolt the section to the car using original holes and then self tapper the plate to the section.

Hi Yellow66,

My plates are the same format, GT66US in premium plate size. I had the same issue and just got a short piece of black (suited the car) conduit about 1 cm or 1.5 cm in diameter and cut it about 2 or 3 cm long and used it as a neat spacer between the plate and the panel. Looks and fits best, won't rust or cause paint problems easily etc.

I  built my plates out to sit flush and put allen key bolts on them so it is harder to steal than with a screw driver also put plastic covers over the top to keep the plates fresh - murf

I think for my old fastback I bent the edges in so it fitted the recess.
can't quite remember but I'm sure thats what i did.
My new car has two aluminium flat bars that bend into shape to fit perfectly for the longer plate. They are about 120mm long and about 20mm width.
I'm spewing as i have cutom american number plate surrounds that don't fit Oz plate sizes!!

Regards
