Aftermarket Hoods
« on: August 11, 2017, 04:21:23 pm »
Hi Guys,

I'm will be taking delivery of my Mustang GT in a week or so and I am looking to fit an aftermarket hood.
I am after the Ram Air Hood (just like the Cervini Ram Air Hood in CJ Pony).
I have been searching through the forum and the internet but can't seem to locate a workshop in Sydney to assist.
I checked the freight costs if I were to buy from CJ Pony Parts and it came to $1,730 for the hood that only costs $800

Also are there any members who know reputable workshops in the Sydney are that can assist me with the hood and paint protection (Opti Coat)?

You can get the Cervini hood from Mustang Motorsports in Melbourne. Not Sydney I know but a lot closer that CJ Pony.

The new paint on the hood will need to properly cure before the coating is applied.  I think it's about a month, even if it's been baked.

For the opti-coat application, just give ZAS (www.zas.com.au) a call on 1300 599 616.  They're the distributor (and based in Sydney) so will be able to recommend a couple of good quality detailers for you.

Thank you Pagey and Dwayne.
I just made a call to Mustang Motorsports and they can freight the hood to me for $110 so it's not too bad.
They can't paint the hood if it is being freighted so I was actually thinking of wrapping it.
I will give Zas a call too.

Any local crash shop will be able to paint the hood for you once it arrives in Sydney.

Hi Greg,

I have been doing some research and spoke to a Mustang Specialist in Sydney and he said to stay away from the fibreglass bonnets as they tend to be warped and the paint does not come up nice on them.
Have you experienced this with your bonnet?
It doesn't make sense to me.
I was thinking that if it is prepped and sanded properly it will be ok for paint but he was adamant it wouldn't work.
He ended up quoting me $1095 for a Roush bonnet scoop which seems to be a bit pricey.
I also had a look at the carbon fibre super snake and it looks beautiful.
I am wondering whether it is best just to bite the bullet and spend the extra $1k to avoid all the hassles.

Maybe he is right - can only go one my experience, to me it is fine but I am sure a purest might have issues - I could probably do some more tweeking on alignment to get it perfect (and yep, painter mate sanded/prepped etc). Only issue I have is that at speed it can move a little (worried that it might fly off, but I am thinking this is more to do with the scoop providing lift and it hasn't budged yet). Thinking about bonnet pins, but also thinking that might look a bit too "try hard"

I did see the bolt on scoops, not really for me and I wanted the grill slots

I am sure there are some in the S550 group in Sydney, best check out a few

cheers

I have the Roush scoop (see pic above) and no dramas after 20,000+ ks. But I do like the look of the Cervini hood

I'm looking the the Cervinis Stalker Ram Hood, but have heard the fibreglass hoods are illegal/ non-compliant in Australia. Anyone have any knowledge on this?
