1/8 Scale 67 Shelby GT500 model subscription
« on: May 18, 2017, 07:35:50 pm »
Went to the Newsagent today and saw issue one of the new Build Your Own 67 Shelby GT500 1/8th scale die cast model. First issue is $4.99 and comes with the Shelby front end. Apparently will be 100 issues (one per week) with some going up to $15 and $20 so makes for a total build at about $2,000 apparently. Is supposed to have working lights, horn and engine sounds, windows that open and close, moving steering etc.
Dimensions are 59cm long x 17cm tall x 23cm wide. I bought the first edition just for the front end. Not sure if I will continue.

I looked at it as well. A nice kit but a lot of money. Even more if you want the Perspex case. Hopefully someone will build it and then put it on Ebay when they're finished.

That's what I was thinking but I think they would want close to the price anyway.

Went in to buy this but there is no way I am paying that much for the rest of that kit.
That sort of coin would put new wheels under my 66!

Saw the ads on TV and there's been a few of these gimmicks around. You're not buying the kit, you're meant to be buying the magazine and the kit is there as enticement.

The only problem I can see is if the magazine folds before it runs its course or newsagents stop stocking it.

As said previously the full kit in bits is available on ebay, but its pretty expensive, a few blogs on building the model as well.
I want a 1:8 scale 65 or 66 Mustang fastback kit but cant find anything, even hard enough to find find in 1:18 in die cast.

Went and bought part 1.
Going to be a an impressive model once it's complete.
Still deciding whether to do the whole thing.
Local news agent says they won't carry it after first issue.

The only upside to buying the mags is that you do it over 100 issues (about 2 years) so in effect paying off the model over that period rather than paying a lump sum for it. But Stephen is right that you have to hope that they go through with all the issues. I couldn't find any full kits available on eBay just individual parts from various weeks.

Looking online they are doing an E type Jaguar in the U.K. As well.
Can't see it going balls up, as they are doing it around the world, and we aren't the first country.
Guess if you treat it as a hobby, then a couple of thou over two years works out cheap.

yep, $1957 and $250 for the display stand.
works out to be about $20 a week.
there are a few kits avail on ebay from europe, prices range from $900-1600. i would guess that there would be a ton of leftovers stock. hoping they pop up in a year or 2 when the distribution company offloads them in full, as i cant see a huge takeup

Thanks, I haven't done the math on the conversion rate plus postage for this but I think it would be over $2K to bring it in.

My dad bought me the first edition. I didn't realise it was metal. The front end is very nice sitting next to my other models. It's very tempting.....
