289 rebuild options
« on: May 12, 2017, 05:01:14 pm »
Hey guys,

Ive got a mate who is about to rebuild his motor.

He's looking for a nice streetable motor around 300-325hp

Starting fresh using existing 289 virgin bore.

Pistons, compression ratio, heads intake cam carby. If anyone can recommend a tried setup that would be great

It's going in front of a 5spd manual.

Budget of around 5g for parts as we will be doing the labour ourselves

All advice appreciated

Cheers Mark

I am keeping the budget in mind as well as the target hp.
1) ebay find a second hand good condition 28oz 302 crank and rods.
2) Set of flat top pistons (I have a set of forged TRW pistons and rings here if interested 30 over).
3) ARP rod bolts.
4) ebay a new set of e-street heads - 170cc 190 intake valve
5) Flat tappet - Lunati Voodoo 61001 camshaft
6) Edelbrock RPM manifold, 650 Holley, half inch open spacer (find second hand and ebay)
+ the rest

I would deck the heads to 58 cc but that is extra cost.

There is a start....

I agree that setup, my setup is similar

Running 650 quicktime carby, pacemaker headers

Went onto calibrated Dyno and ran 325 HP and 335 Nm at 6400 rpm
The smell of burning rubber reminds me of losing my virginity.

spend the money to zero deck the block or don't bother building a hi perf engine.

make it 10.5:1 compression

i would also use .035" thick cometic gaskets but they are pricey.

3.50 gears

drill a .020" hole in both front cam oil galley plugs

use a cloyes true roller timing chain or red rollmaster

use a cheap chinese hi po damper

get it balanced.

msd anti vibration ignition coil.

plug the distributor vacuum advance.

comp cams xe268h can is decent also and might be cheaper than the lunati.

arp or similar good oil pump drive

you can buy eagle i beam rods for around the same price it will cost to install arp rod bolts in your stock ones.

good 3 row radiator with a high density core.

1717p flex a lite mechanical fan with shroud or oem electric fans with a fan controller.

high flow milodon 180 degree t stat.

14 - 16 lb rad cap.

crane anti pump lifters or crower cool face cam oiler lifters.

remflex gaskets with 1 1/2" or 1 5/8" headers.

magnaflow mufflers

double pumper carb.

1/2 grooved main bearings.

A lot of the early 289 blocks have the oil feed to the trust plate / timing chain blocked - pull that small welsh plug out. The extra 30thou hole is a good idea as Barn details.
Also use a 2 piece real seal - pull rope seal pin out.
