Fender Bolts and paint
« on: April 24, 2017, 08:32:34 am »
Hi, I'm sure this has been a previous topic, but I've got to ask

When reinstalling newly painted fenders, and using the correct star washer bolts. Is there a trick to installing the bolts and preventing  damage to the paint. I'm mainly concerned about chipping when doing up the bolts

Any advice on this is welcome

Thanks
Greg

Clean all the threads up so the bolts thread in easier. Use a hex socket and slowly tighten them up if any chip have your touch up paint on hand

Unfortunately moving the fender to adjust the gaps to hood and door can cause chips, just use touch up paint once you have the gaps correct. A lot of people drill a very small hole just under the bolt head so that if you ever need to remove the panel, you just need to line up the drill holes to get the fender into the original position.

Hope this helps.

I saw a guy used bits of ice cream lids under the bolts when moving around for getting gaps right.  Once the happy with your gaps, remove the plastic & refit each bolt.

I tried this idea with the ice cream container and it worked a treat. A little bit of mucking around but well worth it.  :thumb:

Yep, any thin flexible plastic lid will do.

Don't forget to drill your holes in the plastic before you cut out the pieces champion.  :thumb:

use doner bolts or the like, after you have correct alignment, replace one by one bolt with the newly painted bolts.....use a wrap of masking tape or glad wrap or even better, a section of glad sandwich bag inside the socket....if all fails, colour can be "blown-in" with a low pressure gun.
If you haven't grown up & matured by the age of 55, (65 now & nothin has changed) YOU DON'T HAVE TOO.....Gary
