I need help!!

Continuing from my oil leak thread my car is at the mechanics for Rear main seal replacement and the bearing cap has been removed. Upper half seal will not budge. Crank has been loosened and pursuader used but still no movement.

Mechanic doesnt know what else to do.

He is suggesting just loxer half replacement but I cant see that working after the damage to the upper in trying to remove it.

Suggestions please :cry:

need to drop the crank further to give clearance and then pry each end out.

Do these small block cars have the upper rear seal nailed in? Many FE's of this era have a nail hammered into the ends to wedge them in, if these are still in place, that could make it harder to remove, and getting them out mike make it easier?

Just grasping at straws...

I have no idea but previous threads would indicate not. The pin in the lower cap should be removed when changing from rope to fibre and unfortunately it wasnt. The mechanic is indicating the seal is extremely hard which doesnt make sense to me. Soft = swollen = hard to remove. Hard = zero moisture = shrunk :cry:

Anyway I have told him it has to come out regardless even if he has to use Jelly!! If that finally means engine out then what can I do! :sick: No point having oil pissing out on the floor.

Id be surprised it this engine has never been apart I doubt it would an original staked rope seal

Toledo rear main seal removal tool part# 304196. Available in most spare parts shops or on Ebay.

Particular thanks to sms77 for taking my phone call and offering advice. He is operating a commercial business and is a sponsor of the site. He didnt hesitate to provide knowledge and experience even though I will never be able to use his business from a commercial sense. There are obviously a few other commercial guys that offer advice on this site and from my perspective more power to them.
