Wanted to buy r code Mustang
« on: March 24, 2017, 11:05:37 am »

I thought I would re-post this as previous thread got off topic a bit...it happens.

Hi

Thought I would try the wanted ad again.  I got a fairly good response probably a few years ago now.  Couldnt quite find what I wanted and been looking ever since.

R Code 69 or 70 Sportsroof
4 speed
Must be essentially an original correct car but doesn't have to be concourse.
Prefer original sheet metal
If not numbers car must have correct cobrajet engine..would prefer matching numbers though.
Don't want to be restoring anything ..it has to be done.
Any colour but yellow. (Wife's fault)
Some original documentation would be nice of course..but not essential.

If you have something as described and considering selling or any leads PM me.

Thanks Terry

Hi

Yes I saw that and was waiting for some information.  If that's the car that was for sale in WA previously, from memory it wasn't original mechanically eg engine, diff centre etc..
It certainly looks good. The previous blurb from Shannons is generic and says nothing specific about that car which to me is a bit suspect.  I will wait for some more info.
Anyway good example of what I have in mind.thanks

Previous car specific info is always deleted on shannons website after the car has gone through the auction for some reason.

Oh ok didn't realise that.  Maybe for these situations when car comes back on the market?

So, anyone out there got a good r code for sale?
Happy to hear from US as well if we have any members based in the US.

I've heard people talk favourably about BossKraft & Shermatt for sourcing US based cars.

Might be worth touching base with them by phone or email.

Thanks.  Yes had some contact with Bosskraft.  A few offers of potential restorations etc and certainly looking out for cars in the US.  Problem is having them inspected by someone you trust.  Bosskraft are in Phoenix so that's a good starting point I guess to look in Arizona and nearby states maybe California as well.
Shermatt had contact with a while ago.  Yes should get in touch and try that option again.
Exchange rate and taxes most obvious concern.

Yep and any decent R code will push you into LCT territory unless you get the bargain of the century...

You can still get a good original r code bit better than driver in the 60's US$ So yes I agree around 100k landed.
Anything close to concourse, documented, well optioned quality restorationetc.. there is a significant jump in price now.  I have been looking and researching this for more than two years now there is no doubt prices are up for good restored cars over that period.  US econonmy doing better I guess.
I would imagine the cost of restoring a car is also more expensive as well.  Remember from the middle of this year all imports will attract 10% GST as well under the 1000$ limit as well.

From what I read on the initial post was I have the money to buy a 100k car. Not many people understand the research that goes into these cars to pinpoint exactly what you want, but I could see it from the first post.

Good luck with the search. I did know of a good Q CODE for sale here in Perth recently.

Lees "Q"?  Just flicked through the build thread again and it's stunning.

Yeah. its concourse silver in WA and gold in the east.it was being offered at $120k which would not be asking too much in my opinion.

Hi
Yes thanks for the suggestion.  I have spoken to Lee in the past and have the information.  It's a beautiful car and very close to what I want.  R codes have Ram air.
I would also like a car with mostly original sheetmetal.   I know it's been done properly..I don't doubt that so not being critical I just have a personal preference for a solid original car.  Not easy to find one!

Pretty sure the sheetmetal would be a better fit than original.

With all due respect Terry, I don't think you're ever going to close on a car.
You remind me of a situation some years ago when my sister was trying to sell a very well cared for car and a guy came to look at it one night and declared it was the best example he'd seen after weeks of looking. He then turned around and said he was going to look at another. I said "Hang on a minute, you've just told me this is the best you've seen, so why don't you buy it"? He just gave me a vacant stare and went on his way.

On all cars not just mustangs I like to see original panels or at lease factory made original panels . If its been a rust  bucket or had major damage and after market panels fitted I just don't want it . Some people don't care but I do .

:agree:   If you take it to the extreme you have the guys in the US 'restoring' Mustangs starting out with nothing of the original car other than a fender apron or dash support with a VIN tag/stamp on it.  How does that qualify as a classic?  Same with cars that have been totally nut and bolt restored to better than new condition.  Not that I could afford one anyway, but I just wouldn't care.

For me they have to carry some signs of their years on the road, not to mention have that '60s smell...

Your entitled to your opinion but the truth is I just haven't found the right car.  It's not like there's many to choose from.  "Closing" as you put it has never been a problem in the past I have travelled to the states and bought cars privately and at auctions before.

I'm looking for an original 4 speed r code with mostly original sheet metal. Are you saying that's not possible?  If your referring to the fact I'm not interested in the Q code I gave my reason which I think is reasonable.  It's a personal preference like buying any car.

If I can't find what I'm after,  I simply won't be spending 100-120k.   I am also looking for several other cars so a case of what comes my way first.

Thanks for the replies.
