Wanted to buy r code Mustang
« on: March 15, 2017, 02:33:17 pm »
Hi

Thought I would try the wanted ad again.  I got a fairly good response probably a few years ago now.  Couldnt quite find what I wanted and been looking ever since.

R Code 69 or 70 Sportsroof
4 speed
Must be essentially an original correct car but doesn't have to be concourse.
Prefer original sheet metal
If not numbers car must have correct cobrajet engine..would prefer matching numbers though.
Don't want to be restoring anything ..it has to be done.
Any colour but yellow. (Wife's fault)
Some original documentation would be nice of course..but not essential.

I realise I have probably described what everyone wants but you get the idea.

I have considered other cars and travelled to look but keep coming back to this so see what happens.  I'm in WA so travel to inspect can be an issue but will arrange something.

If you have something as described and considering selling or any leads PM me.

Thanks Terry

Hi
Good to hear from you.  From memory at the time you were in the middle of resolving a few issues.  How is the car at the moment running well?
Yep, I definitely considered yours  Just want to see what new comes my way from this.

Ben to any shows or judging lately with car?

Thanks for the reply Terry

I may be way off here, but isn't a bit hiit and miss with 428 CJ motors as to whether they ever had a partial VIN stamped on them at the factory?
Cheers,
Brian

Hi

Thanks for the comment.  I'm no expert but this is from the cobrajet registry

Starting in 1968 Ford began stamping partial VIN information on a pad just under the back of the driver's side cylinder head of all factory-installed 428 Cobra Jet engines to comply with Government-mandated regulations. Partial VIN stamps have also been found on cylinder heads in the area just above this pad. Service blocks didn't receive VIN stampings, so as engine swaps have taken place over time it has become very difficult to keep up with this "matching numbers" reality. Once an engine is installed it's practically impossible to see this stamping even if it does exist! Ford also stamped partial VINs on transmission cases, so take a peek at when you next have a chance.

I personally don't mind although not my favourite.  Every car I have ever shown my wife that is yellow turns her nose up.
I painted a room yellow once and I had to repaint it.

Correct. Mine has the partial vin on the back of the head, and on the g/box ear.  Engine is date code correctas well. Yes engine has been fixed. Machinist F/Up!! :ouch: :ouch: :ouch: All good now! Took the opportunity to fit some alloy heads!! :evilone: Got a set of headers to go on this winter as well. Kept all the original stuff safe

Yep mine has partial vin on the head -  wonder if the guy who put them on had a bad back couldn't reach down to the pad :)

So what you guys are saying is you could still have the original 428 block in your car but if a previous owner changed the heads at some stage it may no longer be possible to identify it as such...
Cheers,
Brian

Only if the vin was stamped on the head and not the block. You could still work out if it is an original 428 block. but not while its in the car. Date code will tell you if its in the time frame for the car. No way to tell if it had been switched between cars though. Cobra Jet blocks are one of the few with extra ribbing in the crank area. Lots of good info on the cobrajet registery site

Staddy, there is another Poppy Green R code auto in the massive car Museum at Gosford. I know the guy who restored it. From the same 'Rainbow of colours' promotion.

Yup - that's it. It had a service block in it IIRC but once the niggling resto issues were solved, it was a nice car.
