Which fuel to use?
« on: October 13, 2016, 06:56:06 pm »
Ok, so according to my research the ecoboost can use e10 fuel, whilst the GT has to have the 98 RON.

Just going through the owners manual for mine (GT) and it states (pge 98):

"We recommend that you only use high quality fuel the car."

"The engine in your vehicle has been optimised for operation using 95 octane unleaded gasoline

"The engine in your vehicle can also operate using 91 octane unleaded gasoline. However, if you choose to do so, you may notice some minor loss of performance, economy and increase engine noise.

Your vehicle is suitable for use with ethanol blends up to 10% (E5 or E10).....the use of gasoline containing ethanol may increase the fuel consumption of your vehicle."

So, it would seem that it can run on any of the 4 petrols on offer - with noted loss of power, performance and increased engine noise for the 91 and E10.

Whilst I wouldn't love to use nothing but 98, I have to be practical in the knowledge I'll do 40,000ks a year in mine as she is my daily drive. So thinking of going with the 95.

Thoughts?

If they say it can run on 95 so be it but don't use 95 E10 ,it still causes problems .  98 when the price is down and 95 when the price up . I prefer BP then Caltex for fuel .

I think you'll find the U.S. has a different octane measuring system. I stick with 98 from BP for the new mustang and Caltex 95 for the 65 stang.

The only problem is as far as I am aware the GT v8 should be running on 98 but the E boost can run on 95 .

I have the 5.0, and it has done just on 10,000 k's so far. It gets non-E10 95, 98 and standard only when the other two aren't readily available and it desperately needs a drink.
Can't say I have noticed any issues with any of the fuel, power or consumption - but the way I drive it drinks like a drunken sailor anyway, so a little less fuel economy would not be something I notice.

Our GT clearly states inside the fuel cap in can run on E10, I have put a tank of E10 through it, and it hasn't made any difference on power output that I could tell, most times its run on 95.

So let me get this straight. You have purchased a new $60k plus GT with a performance engine in it and you are trying to save money on fuel. If that were the case why didn't you just get the eco boost?
Some quick math to change your mind on the 98 to 95 fuel. The average difference in price between these is 5c. You say you are going to do 40,000 a year. So if you average 10L per 100km, it will probably be higher doing those huge kms you are doing, you need 4000L of fuel.
That works out to a difference of $200 a year for 95oct and 98.
I don't know about you but after I just purchased my $60k GT, I'm not going to risk my engine for $0.05 a litre......
Just saying.

And the worst thing is that E10 actually has about 6% less fuel economy (news article about 3 years ago) - so the 5 cents per litre saving is actually not a saving at all.  3.8% cost saving at $1.30 p/l for 6% loss of economy doesn't make sense.

E10 is a con on the Australian motorist, there is no advantage using E10, it is not environmentally friendly nor economical, just a ploy from the ethanol producers to make money. Ethanol, like methanol, only has half the energy per volume than petrol, usually measured in BTUs (british thermal units).

The ethanol lobby in the USA (corn producing Lobby)has been running this con for decades. On a trip to the US in 2004 I used their low octane fuel whenever I could and calculated my fuel consumption over the 20,000 miles I covered. In South Dakota I had no choice and had to use E10. I drove diagonally across the state, which is pretty flat and my fuel use rose 10% not the 5% I was expecting. I will never use or recommend E10 again.

As the Mustang 5.0 litre is a higher compression engine it needs higher octane fuel to perform well, so take Glenn's advice and use either 95 or 98 non ethanol fuel.

Only 5 cents between unleaded 95 and unleaded 98 well not here ,try 10 cents per litre . At present at some servo s  E10 is $1.18 ,91 unleaded $1.20 , unleaded 95 is $1.28 and unleaded 98 is $1.38 cents per litre . My RAV 4 I run 91 unleaded ,my 66 mustang 98 unleaded and my 70 I run what ever but not E10 . The only thing I use E10 for is killing weeds   just don't use E10 and don't let them get rid of 91 unleaded ,which they are pushing for .

I remember about ten years ago the state government tried to get rid of unleaded to pacify the ill informed greens and environmentalists. Some service stations stopped selling it , but when their customers left them they soon returned to selling unleaded. The state government, made up of too many lawyers, is now trying to slowly legislate it out.

Sugar and corn syrup consumption is collapsing so they are pushing other markets for it.

I only use BP 98, in my S550, my 1966 289 & my 1980 Chrysler Lancer with valve additive.....BP 95 in my 1985 Honda NH80 Lead motor scooter....NEVER E10 IN ANY !!!!!
If you haven't grown up & matured by the age of 55, (65 now & nothin has changed) YOU DON'T HAVE TOO.....Gary

So you're saying using 95 is a risk to the engine. What is the basis for this position? Do you base this on some scientific research or personal opinion. I note your position goes against what Ford say. In fact, both Ford and the federal government fuelforthiught.com.au site stipulate that the 2016 GT Mustang is suitable to use e10 on a daily basis. So if both the federal government and the manufacturer say it's ok to use, who do I sue first when it destroys my motor as so many experts on this site seem to suggest?

Yes, I'm trying to save a few dollars on fuel, anyone who doesn't try to save a few dollars where they can either have too much money or are too stupid.

Am about to clock up 40,000ks in just under a year. 95 is about 8-10 cpl cheaper than 98 where I live, so that's a savings of $320-$400 so far - for doing nothing more than picking up a different coloured fuel pump. Pays for my greenslip. If that makes me a tightass or stupid, I'm good with that.

Thanks for your insightful words of wisdom

I am being a smart A here but the only time I use e10 is to kill the weeds around my home .  I won't put e10 in my mustang nope no way .  The only problem really that I can see it will block up the cats ,well that's what I think anyway . Late model engines are made to run on that stuff and that stuff is getting better than when it 1st came out .

Use BP U98 nothing else.  The Octane Adjust Ratio is derived off the fuel, lower quality fuels retard timing and can cause other issues like LSPI which is bad for these engines.  I would suggest sucking it up and buying the BP U98, mine has run nothing else since new and will stick to it.  While it can run on worse fuels, its not recommended.

LSPI, increased chance of knock and lower performance, direct injection plays nice with better fuels, I dont know what else to add to the list??!!  But hey you do what you like, not sure how long you intend to keep the car but if you have already done 40k kms I would say your warranty will be up before 3 years so if you want to keep her in good shape when it runs out, think of it as an insurance policy.

The only problem with BP is they stick to you with the price .  If they dropped the price  the other fuel companies would drop there prices .

off topic I know, BUT...

My 4 year old holley on my falcon started pissing fuel out the top of the carb, cleaned carby etc and still did it, pulled the float adjustment screws, and rubber o rings perished, I was told by the 95 fuel, quite bizarre.

Edit:  the below comment is incorrect. See later posts on this thread.

@@@@@@@@@@@@

I'm pretty sure all 95 is Ethanol E10.  It will eat rubber.

Avoid Ethanol and stick with 98 (or 91 if your engine is built for it).
