STONE CHIPS REAR 1/4s
«
on:
July 21, 2016, 05:39:40 pm »
Hi all.
Not happy
with the rear 1/4s on the Mustang Just in front of the rear wheels.
lots of stone chips, only 1,500km never been on dirt road.
The colour is Magnetic so it shows up bad.
Just think what it will be like in 10,000km.
Anyone have same problem??

YEP!
I have that issue as well, same colour car too.
Spoke to the detailer who Opti-coated my car about it and there didn't seem a lot that could be done it seems - his only real suggestion was to periodically have them touched up. Which I will probably get him to do every 12 months.
If someone has a solution, I would be very interested.

Perhaps some sort of indiscreet vinyl wrap in the exposed sections? Not sure if you can get a clear wrap, or colour matched wrap so it doesn't look crap.
I hate to think what the areas will look like in 5yrs when the surface rust in all the stone chips has spread.

You can get 3M clear wrap.. It would probably be similar to, if not the same as the invisible 'car-bra' some people have fitted to protect the front bumpers of their cars.
That would be cheaper and (I would imagine) more durable than spraying clear coat over that area.

You can get 3M clear wrap
Not sure if it's 3M but you see some clear or black wrap on part of the rear flare of some Toranas, Porsches, etc.

We did the full front end back to and including the A pillar and mirrors - only had the bonnet done halfway, used the extra on the lower panel from front wheel to front of the rear wheel.
Cost $1,400 and took 2 days.

They claybar and wash before fitting - computer program cuts out clear covering as per make/model.
Hardly see it - just need to be careful when polishing so the lines don't show up.
Cheers

I've had the front of my Cobra done a couple of times - was about $300 for the first 1/3 of the bonnet and front guards. They can go as far back as you like - great guys, good work.

Might be worth noting the protection on your insurance policy. That way it gets replaced too if you have accident.

They are called road trophy's, sign of a car driven not hidden. Touch up paint and a small spot brush if worried about them. I used to when car was first painted, but built it to enjoy, but yea, no gravel roads and I live way out in the country

Toothpicks are good for fixing fine stonechips too. Use them to get the colour in and then build it up with clear slowly.

I've used an airbrush for metallic colour touchups, then filled them with clear.
Fixed a key scratch the length of the car to about 90%, and you could only see it at certain angles.

Made up some very slim front mud flaps or stone guards. Hope they help, also looking into getting side stripes made up that will protect that area.
