EcoBoost - Timing Belt or Chain
« on: June 01, 2016, 10:03:43 pm »
Hi,

(question raised here as relevant to the new Mustang and you might know the answer)

Currently looking at a 2012 Falcon FG EcoBoost for my son - about $15.9K with 92,000 kms.  Was thinking about whether it was due for a timing belt - if the EcoBoost has a belt?

So I rang the local Ford dealer and spoke to the service department - and he told me 'just a minute while I look it up on the computer'. This should have been my first red flag - how would a Ford service guy not know about current model Falcons?? He then came back and said it had a timing chain. I was surprised.

Then I thought I would look it up on Google - and Wikipedia shows cross sections of EcoBoosts - with a timing belt!  (I don't think my son will get it serviced at that dealer if he buys it).

So just checking - does the EcoBoost actually have a timing belt? And if so, any idea on what it will cost for replacement?

Thanks
Shane

Usually timing beltsare replaced at the same time as water pumps, as the job is identical, and that is usually 160k to 180k klm, afaik, depending on car brand.

Yeah, just checked a ford forum and they say chain, too.

Fantastic. Thanks for the help.

And my faith in the dealer is now restored somewhat.

Looked at the car today - very nice with comprehensive dealer service history.

The only concern I had was a slight tick with the motor when idling.

Anyone think this sounds normal? (if anyone here has some experience with these).

Thanks
