Painting 2k at home?
« on: March 16, 2016, 07:45:29 pm »
In the next few weeks I will be starting a big job on repainting my 67. Car was originally a factory black car, now it's a red flaking paint mess, they did not even remove the number plates and lower alloy sill plates!
As I have invested every cent in this car, I will be buying a cheapie eBay soda blaster and hiring a big compressed and will be stripping the paint on all external panels in my backyard.
Now,,,I have always used acrylic primers, acrylic spray paints and budget acrylic top coats without clear. They always end up looking crap 6 months later.
Going to do us 2k primer and if I get the paint and prep work looking ok I might do the top coat.
Any recommendations on a good 2k primer to use for home use?

It's been a long time since I've been a spraypainter, but I think you can get isocyanate free 2k paints now. Strongly suggest asking the question when buying paints as you don't want to get any of that crap in your body.

Yeah I've used the iso free 2 pak paints at home with reasonable results. You still need a good quality mask and good ventilation is also handy.
The biggest problem I had is that without an oven to bake the car, you have to wait for the paint to air dry, giving every bug in the neighbourhood a chance to land on your new paint job.

If you are doing the whole car and can afford it ... I''d get a set of portable shortwave infrared lights ($600-1500) to cure the paint properly.

Could always sell the lights once you've finished. I have a small handheld unit for $150 off alibaba that I use for touchups and smaller pieces like hinges etc and it works great.

Have been reading a lot lately and trying to find what is correct for Australia. Most paint info is for the USA and not here?
Was thinking of using the ISO free paint anyway but if you add the extra hardner does this then make the paint contain ISO ?

Mate I would recommend looking for a spray booth to hire nearby cause as well as dust there is the issue with filtering the air for water properly otherwise three months later the bubbles appear, Good luck.

Last time I rented a paint booth as suggest above. You do not need to bake it - hardener will do its job.

The more expensive stuff like Sikkens, use less hardner in the primer its 5:1 of course the base  has no hardner but clear is generally 2:1.

I have used a lot of 2k highbuild primers. Protec and carmaster and some other unknown brands. All seem to work well. Dust not as big a issue as you have to block it back. I am not a spray painter but my recomendation is to Make sure you have a hvlp gravity feed gun with correct size nozzle. Filter your paint and primers, just with the cheap cone shaped filter, wear a mask. Any 2k high build primer will be better than spray putty and a acrylic primers.

Hey mate, We used Epitec by protec with hardener and it came up a treat, it's been on my car for 7 months now, and not a problem in sight. It is easy on the wallet too, and was maybe $130 for 4 litres including hardener. (from memory)
I wasn't too concerned with price but the paint shop guy said that it is one of their best products. shot the first coat on, waited 10 minutes for it to dry a little then a second coat. No heat lights needed but was in a closed workshop.
Check out my build thread for pics, cheers

Have found a place in Melbourne (Kilsyth) that sells black base protec primer surfaced, I think its $150 for 6 litres will be using that. Really over acrylic based primers especially the paint volume you need and the overall softness. Thanks for all the replies :)

Don't cheap out, you get what you pay for find someone who sell Sikkens & Lesonol or Cromax ( the new name for Dupont) and buy that. Debeers, Protec etc is made to a price trust me.

Since Protec were bought by PPG industries, the paints have definitely improved, so not that bad. I am using there paint to paint my car and very happy so far with the 2 pack primer.
As far as I know they do not sell the Epitec any more.

I painted my race car in Protec 2 pack paint 4 years ago and it still looks as good today as it did then (and for a first timer paint job it was great!!).  I used coveralls and the correct filters on the full face mask.  Just a regular 13cfm (?) compressor with standard water trap.  HVLP gun (not an exy brand).  No fancy infra-red heaters.  Basic plastic homemade spray booth inside the garage and basic ventilation fans.  Dried pretty quickly so no bugs.

All depends on whether you want a 10/10 job or an 8-9/10 job as to if you throw all the extra money at it......I'm no expert though, just my experiences.
