noisy rear gears...
« on: February 09, 2016, 01:08:12 pm »
so - about a year ago I bought a new set of Ford Racing 3:73 gears for my '02 Cobra. A few months ago I got them installed at a local (highly recommended) diff specialist, and they rebuilt the LSD clutches and did all the bearings.
The 3.73:1 gears all great, loads of extra 'go' but at around 90kph they have started to whine under slight load - back off and the noise disappears. This is the 3rd rear end that they're rebuilt for me (not this car), and this is the first I've had an issue with.

The issue is, because I bought the gears, the rebuilder (rightly) said at the start that they wouldn't warrant the rebuild against noisy gears as they didn't supply the gears and it's apparently a common problem with aftermarket gears. So, it is pissing me off as the noise is more prevalent than it was a month ago, and I'm worried that it may continue to get worse.

Any thoughts - should I chose a different manufacturers gears - if so which one?
Should I go to a different builder, if so, which one? (I'm in the SE suburbs of Melbourne)
Are these gears saveable (as they weren't noisy to begin with?) or are they toast?
Should I just turn up the radio/roll down the window and ignore it?

Thoughts on a postcard to......

I had similar issues with a workshop; diff got noisy 6 months after installation; took it to them to service, six months later the same thing. They told me that's how it is; you just have to keep changing shims.

Stuff that! I took my car to Diff Technics; the guy said, why don't you take it back to them?

What and return after another 6 months?

Do it once, do it right! Haven't had a problem after Diff Technics serviced it.  I have a bit of diff noise in both my cars but not one that gets progressively worse like with the shonky mob I first took it to.

Well, I'm not sure I'll get it done in the short term - I just bought a ported blower in the US, so I'll be getting the 6lb crank pulley, so that will likely be the next project. I'm currently running 10lbs so 16 should be more than enough, and will likely max out the fuel system and I don't really want the expense of going full-return, but we'll see what happens.

Maybe you should buy & bolt-on my Eaton afterwards??

Any ideas what type and who sells them? YOUR Eaton? Any pics and what is involved in installing? Parts/tune?? Tempting.....  :evilone:

Jeff, try a full tube of "Molybond" in it and see if that helps?

Jeff after all the reading about upgrading a 2001 Cobra I think I will leave her alone and just get a good dyno tune flashed. Might get a few more horses and pedal response.
Seems to difficult and expensive. Internals need upgrading if you go to big HP and boost.
